GOPIO 2024 Convention, adopts dual nationality resolution

GOPIO 2024 Convention held, adopts dual nationality resolution demanding full dual nationality rights for Overseas Indian Citizens (OCI) card holders. This resolution, among others, was passed during the culmination of the GOPIO 2024 Convention, marking its 35th anniversary at the esteemed Royal Albert Palace in Fords, New Jersey, from April 26 to 28.

Advancing the Cause of the Indian Diaspora

At the heart of the convention’s deliberations was a fervent exploration of India’s present and future, and the pivotal role diaspora Indians can play in realizing this vision. Themed ‘Opportunities for Diaspora Indians in India’s Big Manifest Future,’ the convention served as a platform for impassioned discussions and resolutions aimed at empowering and elevating the global Indian community.

Noteworthy Resolutions and Recognitions

Alongside the call for full dual nationality for OCI card holders, GOPIO championed several other resolutions, including:

  • Equalizing OCI privileges with those of Indian citizens in conducting business within India.
  • Advocating for Aadhar Card provision to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who hold Indian citizenship.
  • Urging the Biden Administration and the US Congress to expedite legislation to alleviate the backlog of Indians awaiting permanent residence in the USA.

Furthermore, the convention witnessed the presentation of prestigious community service awards to individuals and organizations making exemplary contributions:

  • Lion Hina Trivedi of Chicago, celebrated for her outstanding community-building endeavors.
  • Dr. Neerja A. Gupta, the first woman Chancellor of Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, India.
  • Dr. V.K. Raju M.D., recognized for his commendable efforts in combating childhood blindness.
  • Dharmatma Saran, lauded as the cultural ambassador of India for fostering networking among young women achievers through the Miss India Worldwide Pageant.
  • Heart and Hand for the Handicapped (HHH) and the South Asian Council for Social Services (SACSS), acknowledged for their remarkable service to marginalized communities in the New York Area.

A Celebration of Excellence and Leadership

The convention also featured the felicitation of distinguished individuals and entities for their significant contributions to various fields, including pharmaceuticals, business, media, and community service. Notable honorees included Dr. Vithal Dhaduk, Anurag Pande of Sabinsa, Poonam Khubani, Bharat Patel, Dr. H.R. Shah of TV Asia, Dr. Sudhir Parikh of Parikh Worldwide Media, and many others.

In a momentous decision, the General Body unanimously elected Dr. Thomas Abraham as Chairman of GOPIO International for the remainder of the current term, reaffirming his leadership and commitment to the organization’s mission.

Amidst accolades, resolutions, and spirited discussions, the GOPIO 2024 Convention stood as a testament to the unity, resilience, and collective aspirations of the global Indian diaspora, poised to shape a brighter and more inclusive future for generations to come.
