Spotlight: From Gulbarga to Global Recognition: Dr. Khursheed Receives PBSA from President Murmu: In a world where migration shapes economies and cultures, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) continue to play a pivotal role in strengthening India’s global presence. Among them stands one of the brightest examples—Dr. Syed Anwar Khursheed, a distinguished physician whose life embodies healing, leadership, and legacy. Born in Gulbarga, Karnataka, he transformed determination into decades of global impact, earning the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) 2025 for “Medical Science” in Saudi Arabia.

From Gulbarga to Global Service
When young Dr. Khursheed stepped into the world of medicine, he carried not just academic ambition but a resolute purpose. Over the next 45 years, that purpose led him to become one of Saudi Arabia’s most respected medical professionals. As a leading physician at King Faisal Hospital in Taif and later a Royal Protocol doctor, he cultivated trust, compassion, and excellence—qualities that earned him admiration across the Kingdom.
Transitioning into public service, he strengthened Indo-Saudi people-to-people ties through healthcare, education, and welfare initiatives. “Indians are treated far better overseas today,” he says, reflecting on India’s rising global stature.
Championing the Indian Diaspora
Throughout his journey, Dr. Khursheed consistently uplifted the Indian community abroad. “Many NRIs feel lonely at the beginning, but that often leads them to becoming pioneers,” he remarks. His own life reflects this truth.

He acknowledges the vital support of the Consulate General of India in Jeddah and the Embassy of India in Riyadh, noting their role in not only assisting the community during crises but also in hosting cultural events that help NRIs stay rooted in their heritage.
A Lifeline During Covid-19
During the pandemic, when uncertainty gripped the world, Dr. Khursheed became a pillar of strength for thousands of Indians in Saudi Arabia. He ensured timely consultations, vaccination support, and essential guidance—proving that leadership shines brightest during adversity.

Healing the Millions During Hajj
For over three decades, Dr. Khursheed played a crucial part in one of the world’s largest annual gatherings—the Hajj pilgrimage. He set up critical care units in Mina and Arafat, trained medical teams, and helped design emergency protocols that safeguarded millions of pilgrims, including countless Indians.
Education as a Living Legacy
Beyond medicine, Dr. Khursheed established the International Indian School in Taif, a landmark institution providing quality education to expatriate families. His vision later paved the way for Indian educational initiatives across Saudi Arabia.

Today, as Vice President of the Saudi-Indian Healthcare Forum, he continues to enhance bilateral cooperation in medical science—bridging cultures through knowledge and mutual respect.
Advocating for NRI Recognition
Firmly voicing the contributions of NRIs, he stresses the need for greater acknowledgment.
“NRIs have contributed immensely to India’s GDP through remittances, labour, and dedicated service,” he asserts. He also calls for tax incentives, protection of livelihoods, and voting rights for Indians residing overseas.
Strengthening Community Bonds
Dr. Khursheed remains deeply committed to social welfare. Through organizations like the Gulbarga Welfare Society and MESCO, he channels support to underprivileged Indian families. A strong supporter of AYUSH medicine, he promotes its acceptance in the Gulf.

Yet he remains sensitive to emotional challenges many NRIs face. He believes embassies must continue nurturing a sense of belonging through cultural programs and community engagement.
Honoured at Home and Abroad
The PBSA recognition sparked emotional celebrations in both Saudi Arabia and his hometown, Gulbarga, where preparations began for a grand reception. As the first PBSA recipient from Karnataka, he has brought immense pride to the state and the global Indian community.
“I was humbled to be felicitated by the Indian Ambassador during the Republic Day ceremony,” he shares. Several community groups in Riyadh also organized special events to honour his achievements.
A Legacy That Inspires Generations
Dr. Syed Anwar Khursheed’s journey stands as a compelling testament to the power of purpose. His contributions span continents—healing patients, educating children, guiding communities, and strengthening India’s global ties.
His message to the next generation is simple yet profound:
“Let the seeds we sow today become fruits for generations to come.”
A life devoted to service, leadership, and humanity—Dr. Khursheed embodies the extraordinary potential of NRIs who continue to elevate India’s image across the world.
