CM Fadnavis Welcomes Tesla to India: Model Y Launches at Rs 60 Lakh: In a major milestone for India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, Tesla officially launched its first showroom — the Tesla Experience Centre — at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on Tuesday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the grand opening, welcoming Tesla’s arrival as a transformative step for India’s mobility future.

This launch marks Tesla’s first official physical presence in India, signalling its clear intent to tap into the country’s growing EV market. The company also plans to establish a logistical network, service systems, and a large-scale charging infrastructure to support its operations and customers.

Meanwhile, Tesla has announced the prices of its Model Y SUV for India, marking a significant milestone in the country’s EV market. Elon Musk-owned Tesla is launching two variants of the Model Y, signalling its much-awaited entry after years of speculation and policy hurdles.

Firstly, the standard rear-wheel drive variant claims a range of 500 kilometres and is priced at approximately Rs 60 lakh. Secondly, the long-range version promises a 622-kilometre range, coming in at nearly Rs 70 lakh.

Deliveries are set to begin in the final quarter of 2025. The Model Y can be registered in Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai.

Additionally, Tesla announced that customers can upgrade to full self-driving capabilities for an extra Rs 6 lakh. However, the company clarified:

“Activation and use of these features depend on achieving reliability far exceeding human drivers, supported by billions of miles of experience and regulatory approvals, which may take longer in some regions. As these self-driving features evolve, your car will receive continuous over-the-air software updates,” Tesla stated.

Notably, the Model Y’s pricing in India is almost double its US price, where it sells for around $38,000 (approximately Rs 33 lakh). This price difference is due to India’s high import duty on completely built units. For now, Tesla has no plans to manufacture locally, as confirmed earlier by Indian government officials.
