Deepavali’s UNESCO Recognition Celebrated at High Commission of India in Abuja: The High Commission of India in Abuja hosted a vibrant cultural evening on December 10, 2025, at the Chancery to celebrate the historic inscription of Deepavali on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The event brought together members of the Indian diaspora, cultural leaders, and friends of India to mark a proud global moment for Indian culture and traditions.

High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, Ambassador Abhishek Singh, highlighted the deep civilizational significance of Deepavali and its universal message of light, hope, and harmony. He emphasized that UNESCO’s recognition affirms Deepavali’s global relevance and reflects India’s enduring cultural influence. Furthermore, Ambassador Singh underscored the vital role of the Indian diaspora in preserving, promoting, and sharing India’s rich cultural heritage across the world.

Adding warmth to the occasion, Mr. Obi Asika, Director General of the National Council for Arts & Culture, delivered a heartfelt goodwill message. He praised India’s cultural diversity and noted the strong people-to-people ties between India and Nigeria, which continue to grow through shared values, artistic exchange, and mutual respect.

The celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation from a large number of Indian community members and friends of India, creating an atmosphere of unity and festivity. Traditional cultural expressions, conversations, and shared reflections made the evening both meaningful and memorable.
