Discovering the Singapore Sound: Shabir Music Asia Launches “Project Zero” Podcast

Singapore

Shabir Music Asia announces the launch of its groundbreaking podcast series, “Project Zero.” Hosted by the acclaimed multi-hyphenate artist Indian origin Shabir Sulthan, this visual podcast dives deep into the heart of Singapore’s vibrant music scene. Over 10 episodes, it features in-depth conversations with some of the most influential music artists from Singapore. As the nation gears up to celebrate its 59th birthday, the podcast explores the Singaporean identity, multiculturalism in music, and the quest to define the elusive “Singapore Sound.”

The Genesis of Project Zero

In 2021, during a conversation with Singapore’s celebrated musicians Dick Lee and Rahimah Rahim, Shabir was asked a thought-provoking question: “But what is the Singapore sound?” This query, coupled with Rahimah’s encouragement, “I’m sure you can find it,” set Shabir on a soul-searching journey. He embarked on a mission to explore what truly defines Singapore’s musical landscape.

Shabir’s introspective journey continued in 2022 when he spoke to Bandwagon Asia, remarking, “Singapore has one of the most unique musical landscapes in potential. But I question if we have explored that potential to the fullest.”

Challenges in the Singapore Music Scene

The Singaporean music scene faces several challenges. Musicians often lack curiosity about each other’s cultures and genres, leading to a division that hampers collaboration. Language barriers also contribute to this divide, with artists who sing in different languages often not initiating cross-genre collaborations. These challenges inspired Shabir to create a platform that would unite Singaporean musicians and spark discussions about a sound unique to the nation.
