Donald Trump Slashes US Prescription Drug Prices by 59% Following New Pharma Policy Announcement. In a sweeping move aimed at easing consumer burdens and asserting global leadership on healthcare costs, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday, May 12, a dramatic 59% cut in prescription drug prices. This bold action follows just one day after Trump revealed his new pharmaceutical policy initiative.

Using his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump declared, “DRUG PRICES TO BE CUT BY 59%, PLUS! Gasoline, Energy, Groceries, and all other costs, DOWN. NO INFLATION!!! LOVE, DJT.

The announcement came just hours before Trump signed a new executive order at 9:00 a.m. on Monday. The order mandates immediate implementation of the revised pharmaceutical policy, positioning the United States to adopt a “Most Favoured Nation” pricing model. This model ensures that Americans pay no more for medication than the lowest price paid by other nations for the same drugs.

Trump’s Most Favoured Nation Policy

According to reports from AFP, the Trump administration plans to tie U.S. drug prices to the international market, ensuring reductions ranging from 30% to 80% depending on the medication. While U.S. consumers will benefit from these cuts, pharmaceutical companies will be required to adjust their global pricing strategies, potentially increasing drug costs in other countries.

The term “Most Favoured Nation” refers to a principle upheld by the World Trade Organization (WTO), which promotes fair competition by preventing preferential treatment between trading partners. Under Trump’s plan, this approach aims to leverage America’s buying power and force pharmaceutical giants to play fair.

A Renewed Push for Drug Price Reform

This isn’t Trump’s first attempt to tackle high drug prices. During his first term in office, he introduced similar measures aimed at lowering costs for Americans. Most recently, last month, he signed an executive order allowing U.S. states more authority to negotiate directly with manufacturers and seek lower prices from international suppliers.

With this latest move, Trump has given pharmaceutical companies a 30-day deadline to comply with the new pricing standards. If they fail to reduce their prices accordingly, they will face stiff penalties and be subjected to strict government price controls, as reported by the Associated Press.

Impact and Public Reception

This announcement comes at a time when American families are struggling with inflation across multiple sectors. By focusing on tangible cost-of-living reductions—including energy, groceries, and healthcare—Trump is positioning himself as a populist leader ahead of the upcoming election cycle.

Transitioning from policy talk to action within just 24 hours has given Trump’s announcement momentum. Supporters have lauded the move as a long-overdue step toward economic relief, while critics are questioning the feasibility of such a drastic shift in pricing without pushback from the powerful pharmaceutical industry.

As the dust settles on Trump’s latest executive order, all eyes will be on pharmaceutical companies and their response. Will they bow to pressure and lower prices, or will this spark a new confrontation over drug pricing policies?

One thing is certain: Trump’s 59% drug price cut is poised to reshape the national healthcare debate and could become a key talking point in the upcoming election season.
