Friends of Bangladesh UK Hosts Charity Gala to Support Vulnerable Communities in Bangladesh: In a heartwarming display of compassion and community spirit, the UK-based diaspora organization Friends of Bangladesh (FOB), UK hosted its annual Charity Dinner and Cultural Evening on Saturday, October 11, at the prestigious Mayfair Venue in London. The event aimed to raise funds for humanitarian projects supporting underprivileged people in Bangladesh.

The evening brought together community leaders, diplomats, and supporters united by a shared goal — to extend a helping hand to the poor and destitute in Bangladesh. The primary focus of this year’s fundraising campaign was to provide medical care for women battling breast cancer, rehabilitate street children, and fund eye restoration initiatives for visually impaired individuals.
Humanitarian Vision and Impact
Dr. Mohammad Aziz, General Secretary of FOB, highlighted the organization’s ongoing efforts to operate a mobile breast cancer screening unit across rural Bangladesh. This initiative enables early detection and treatment for women who lack access to urban healthcare facilities.
“We are planning to launch a mobile cataract surgery unit soon,” Dr. Aziz announced. “Our goal is to restore the gift of sight to those living in remote areas who cannot afford surgery.”

Since its founding in 1982, Friends of Bangladesh (UK) has served as a symbol of compassion and patriotism for the Bangladeshi diaspora. One of its core principles, “Hundred Percent Goes to the Beneficiaries,” ensures that every penny raised directly benefits those in need, with zero administrative deductions.
Dignitaries Commend the Initiative
Representing the Bangladesh High Commission (UK), Commercial Counsellor Tanvir Mohammad Azim read a message from the High Commissioner, stating,
“Friends of Bangladesh is not just an expatriate organization; it is a humanitarian force bringing real change to the lives of underprivileged people in Bangladesh.”
The event was graced by several prominent guests, including MP Andrew Rosindell, MP Dame Siobhain McDonagh, Cllr Sirajul Islam (Leader, Tower Hamlets Labour Group), Cllr Mohammad Islam (Mayor of Croydon), community leader K. M. Abu Taher Chowdhury, and BBCA President Tofazzal Mia. Their presence and words of encouragement added inspiration to the evening.

A Night of Giving and Cultural Celebration
FOB President Dr. Md. Ziaul Haque presided over the event, while Dr. Mohammad Aziz oversaw overall coordination. Trustees, including former president Mahbub Izdani Khan, joined other executive members in hosting the evening.
The event featured a documentary showcasing the organization’s humanitarian projects, presented by Dr. M. A. Auwal. Consultant Breast Surgeon Dr. Zakirullah also delivered an educational presentation on breast cancer awareness and self-examination techniques.
The fundraising segment, led by renowned community figure Ajmal Masroor, generated generous donations from attendees. He was assisted by Treasurer Nurul Islam, ensuring transparency and engagement throughout the process.
Hosts Farhan Mahmud Khan, Solicitor Imtiaz Hossain, and Khadija Nasim conducted the event, while Accountant Syed Arif Qazi delivered the vote of thanks. In his closing remarks, Dr. Ziaul Haque expressed deep gratitude to all guests, sponsors, and supporters for their continued trust and generosity.
Cultural Performances and Community Spirit
The cultural segment featured captivating performances by artists Al Amin Shad, Sampa Dewan, and others, filling the hall with music and celebration. The lively auction and raffle draw added excitement, symbolizing unity through shared purpose.
The event drew participation from doctors, lawyers, business leaders, accountants, and representatives of various organizations across the UK. Their collective presence reflected a strong message — even while living abroad, the Bangladeshi diaspora remains deeply committed to uplifting the less fortunate back home.
Reaffirming its mission, Friends of Bangladesh UK pledged to continue dedicating its efforts and resources to serve humanity and support Bangladesh’s impoverished and marginalized communities.
