Germany to Increase Work Visas for Skilled Indians From 20,000 to 90,000. In a bid to address labor shortages, the German government has announced plans to increase work visas for skilled Indian professionals from 20,000 to 90,000 per year, significantly boosting opportunities for Indian workers in key sectors.
The move is part of Germany’s accelerated efforts to attract foreign talent and stimulate economic growth by filling critical vacancies. German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, confirmed the new visa quota and emphasized that the focus will be on information technology, nursing, and caregiving, where shortages are most severe.
Germany Simplifies Migration Process
Germany has introduced several measures to make migration easier for Indian workers, following the lead of countries like Japan. A significant improvement is the reduction in visa processing times for Indian applicants. Previously, applicants waited up to nine months to receive their visas. Now, visas will be processed in just two weeks, benefiting nearly 400,000 applicants who were previously caught in delays.
In addition, language requirements for Blue Card applicants have been eased. Indian workers no longer need to demonstrate high proficiency in German, and the salary threshold for migrant workers has been lowered. Holding a degree will also be sufficient for obtaining a Blue Card, opening doors for more qualified professionals.
Labor Shortages Create Demand in Multiple Sectors
Germany’s efforts to attract skilled Indian workers come at a crucial time. According to the German Economic Institute, there are 570,000 unfilled job vacancies across the country, creating ample opportunities for new arrivals. The European Labour Authority (ELA) highlights that over 70 occupations are experiencing labor shortages, particularly in transportation, construction, engineering, healthcare, and IT.
Among the most in-demand roles are drivers, machine operators, cabinet makers, and food preparers. These vacancies underline the pressing need for skilled workers to sustain Germany’s economy and services.
With streamlined migration policies and a higher visa cap, Germany is positioning itself as an attractive destination for Indian professionals seeking international opportunities.
