India’s 35-Million Strong Diaspora Poised as ‘True Partners’ in Nation’s Journey to 2047, Says New Report: A landmark report released on March 23 by the global community organization Indiaspora paints an inspiring picture of the Indian diaspora as a dynamic and increasingly influential force in the country’s remarkable development story, as India sets its sights on the centenary of its independence in 2047.

The report, titled ‘India and its Diaspora: Partners in Progress’, celebrates the vast and evolving influence of the overseas Indian community, which now exceeds 35 million people across more than 200 countries. It estimates the diaspora’s collective annual income from formal employment alone at an impressive $730 billion, highlighting a community that is not just a source of remittances, but a powerhouse of global capital, capability, and credibility.

“In 1991, India opened its doors to the world. Today, the world is knocking on India’s door,” said M.R. Rangaswami, founder and chairman of Indiaspora, in a statement accompanying the release. “At this inflection point, India has the opportunity to unlock the power of a 35-million-strong diaspora… as true partners in India’s journey to 2047.”

Beyond Remittances: A New Kind of Engagement

While India remains the world’s largest recipient of remittances—with inflows reaching $138 billion, nearly doubling over the last decade—the report highlights a decisive and exciting shift in the nature of the diaspora’s contributions. Engagement is evolving from primarily financial support for families to a more sophisticated, multi-dimensional partnership that is already bearing fruit across multiple sectors.

Drawing on insights from over 200 diaspora leaders across 24 countries, the study outlines how this vibrant community is deepening its ties through investment, knowledge exchange, technology partnerships, and global networks. The diaspora is celebrated as a “living bridge” that connects Indian markets, ideas, and aspirations with the world, bringing global best practices home while taking India’s innovation to the world stage.

The report notes with pride that the Indian diaspora is now deeply embedded within global systems. Indian-origin professionals are leading some of the world’s most valuable corporations, co-founding the majority of global unicorns outside India, and holding senior government positions in roughly 30 countries. In the technology sector, their impact is particularly inspiring, with Indian-origin researchers and engineers playing foundational roles in the generative AI revolution, helping shape the future of technology itself.

The OCI: A Powerful Bridge for Deeper Engagement

Central to this growing partnership is the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, a transformative initiative that allows diaspora members to live, work, and invest in India indefinitely. The report celebrates the OCI as a powerful bridge that has already strengthened ties between India and its global family, turning sentiment into sustained participation.

Looking ahead, the report suggests exciting opportunities to build on this foundation. Recommendations include expanding the OCI’s integration with India’s world-leading digital infrastructure, such as Aadhaar, to provide seamless access to banking and services, as well as simplifying tax residency rules to encourage OCIs to spend more time in the country. By making it easier for OCI holders to engage fully in India’s economic and social life, the nation can unlock even greater contributions from its global talent pool, creating a virtuous cycle of growth and collaboration.

A Reservoir of Optimism and a Shared Vision

Indiaspora’s survey of diaspora members revealed a deep well of optimism about their ability to contribute to India’s growth. Respondents are motivated by a powerful desire to reconnect with their roots and create meaningful impact, with many expressing interest in contributing across business, philanthropy, academia, and government.

The report also offers a forward-looking set of recommendations for both Indian policymakers and diaspora leaders to strengthen this collaboration. For India, the focus is on reinforcing identity-based connections, streamlining regulatory frameworks, and creating trusted avenues for contribution that align with the nation’s ambitious goals. For the diaspora, the emphasis is on moving toward more coordinated, institution-linked involvement—turning individual goodwill into collective, lasting impact.

Forging a Shared Vision for India@100

The report builds on Indiaspora’s previous impact studies, including a 2024 report on the Indian American community. Its release comes at a moment of great momentum for India, with recent free trade agreements with the UK and the EU signaling its deepening integration into the global economy and its rising stature on the world stage.

“The question is no longer whether the diaspora has something to contribute, but how,” the report’s letter from Indiaspora states. It concludes on a note of optimism and shared purpose: “India’s journey to 2047 will be written by those who choose to participate. Indiaspora is committed to ensuring the global Indian diaspora is not merely a witness to this transformation but an active architect of it. The bridge is built, let us walk across it together.”
