Pakistani director Iram Parveen Bilal has won the prestigious Best Director Feature Film award at the fifth Yellowstone International Film Festival (YIFF) for her groundbreaking film Wakhri. The festival, held in New Delhi from November 15 to 20, 2024, celebrates cinematic excellence from around the globe, with a focus on themes such as women empowerment, environmental awareness, and student films.

Wakhri, meaning “one of a kind” in Punjabi, draws inspiration from the life of the late Qandeel Baloch, a Pakistani social media celebrity whose bold persona challenged societal norms. The film follows Noor, a widowed schoolteacher who unexpectedly becomes a social media sensation, navigating fame while confronting the complex dynamics of societal expectations.

“Thank you for the honor, jury and organizers,” Bilal expressed on Instagram after the win. “Wakhri shines brightest with its audiences. Deep gratitude to my entire team, cast, and crew alike, for enhancing my vision every step of the way.”

The film features a stellar cast led by acclaimed Pakistani actress Faryal Mehmood, alongside Gulshan Mated, Sajjad Gul, Salem Mairaj, Sohail Sameer, Bakhtawar Mazhar, Akbar Islam, Tooba Siddiqui, Behjat Nizami, and Bushra Habib. Co-written by Bilal and Mehrub Moiz Awan, Wakhri is produced by Abid Aziz Merchant, Apoorva Bakshi, and Parveen Shah Productions.

Wakhri made its world premiere at the Red Sea International Film Festival in December 2023 and was released in Pakistan on January 5, 2024. Its bold narrative and compelling storytelling have resonated with audiences and critics alike, earning accolades across the international film circuit.

The Yellowstone International Film Festival has established itself as a vital platform for filmmakers worldwide, showcasing impactful stories and fostering cross-cultural dialogue. This year’s festival spotlighted films that championed powerful messages, including Wakhri, which continues to leave an indelible mark.

Bilal’s win highlights the strength of South Asian cinema and the ability of storytellers to challenge societal norms through creative expression. As Wakhri garners acclaim, it paves the way for more stories that inspire, empower, and connect with audiences worldwide.
