Key Changes Under the New Rules

Under the newly implemented rules, some categories of work permit holders are now allowed to change their employer after just nine months, significantly reducing the waiting period. This change aims to offer more freedom to workers and flexibility to employers seeking skilled personnel (RTE).

Additionally, Ireland has introduced a new seasonal employment permit to address labor shortages in sectors that require temporary workers. This permit is targeted at industries like agriculture, where workers such as berry pickers are needed during specific seasons. This new permit will facilitate easier access for seasonal workers, helping to meet Ireland’s labor demands more effectively (RTE).

Furthermore, work permit holders can now be promoted within their current roles without needing to apply for a new permit. This adjustment is expected to retain talent and provide career growth opportunities for foreign workers (RTE).

Support Measures for Permit Holders

The new regulations also include measures to support work permit holders, such as ensuring access to adequate accommodation and training. To address shortages in critical industries, Ireland has introduced new quotas for work permits. A total of 500 work permits are now allocated to the home care sector, helping to meet the growing demand for care workers. Additionally, 250 permits have been granted to lineworkers, aimed at alleviating strain on ESB Networks’ overhead line framework contractors (RTE).
