Lawrence Batley Theatre Launches Community Ambassadors Scheme to Celebrate Diversity and Inclusion. Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield is taking bold steps to ensure its programming reflects the vibrant diversity of its community. Through its innovative Community Ambassadors scheme, the theatre is working closely with local South Asian artists to welcome new audiences and create a more inclusive arts environment.

Launched two years ago, the scheme aims to address the underrepresentation of South Asian communities in the theatre’s audience, staff, and programming. By collaborating with local artists and community members, the theatre has made significant strides in broadening its reach and impact.

A Platform for Underrepresented Voices

The Community Ambassadors, who include dance artist Hardeep Sahota, producer and food author Sobia Bashir, and theatre maker Madiha Ansari, play a pivotal role in engaging with various community groups. They organise workshops, discussions, and performances that highlight diverse cultural perspectives, ensuring that underrepresented voices are heard and celebrated.

Since its inception, the scheme has kickstarted several creative projects. These include the South Asian women’s choir Song Geet, the multicultural music and dance showcase Rasm-e-Milan, and Prince Re:imagined , a large-scale Arts Council-funded project that reinterprets the music of Prince across diverse genres. Additionally, the theatre now hosts regular Bhangra Nights featuring DJs, Dhol drum players, and dance classes, further enriching its cultural offerings.

Exciting Future Projects

The Community Ambassadors scheme continues to grow, with exciting projects lined up for 2025. In spring, the theatre will present 10 Nights, an Olivier Award-nominated drama by South Asian theatre makers. Written by Shahid Iqbal Khan and produced by Phizzical Productions, the play tells the story of a man’s journey of self-discovery during the last ten nights of Ramadan.

The theatre will also host Rassam, a free photography exhibition curated by Hardeep Sahota and captured by local photographer John Slemensek-Thorne. The exhibition explores South Asian traditions and will be a visual celebration of cultural heritage.

Furthermore, the theatre is developing a South Asian Arts Cultural Hub, providing space for South Asian artists to hone their craft and showcase their work. This initiative underscores the theatre’s commitment to fostering creativity and inclusivity.

Madiha Ansari, a theatre maker and Community Ambassador, added, “As a South Asian artist, serving as a community ambassador is a profound honour. It allows me to connect the arts with my community in meaningful ways. Representation matters, and it’s crucial for young people to see individuals who look like them in influential roles, fostering aspiration and belief in their potential.”

Hardeep Sahota, a dance artist and Community Ambassador, echoed these sentiments: “Being a Community Ambassador at Lawrence Batley Theatre is such a rewarding experience. It’s a chance to promote diversity, inclusivity, and community engagement while celebrating the arts and nurturing a shared cultural identity.”

A Commitment to Inclusion

Becky Dash, Chief Executive of Lawrence Batley Theatre, emphasized the importance of the scheme: “Lawrence Batley Theatre is the creative heart of Huddersfield, a theatre built by the community for the community. Our Community Ambassadors scheme is helping the theatre reflect the people it serves today. We want communities to feel welcome here and to leave inspired. This scheme has made positive changes to our programme, brought different cultures together, and provided opportunities for learning and connection.”

As the theatre continues to expand its efforts, it remains dedicated to making the arts accessible to all and ensuring that its programming reflects the rich tapestry of Huddersfield’s diverse community.
