Mamta Singh Makes History as First Indian American Elected in Jersey City: In a historic moment for one of America’s largest Indian American communities, Mamta Singh has been elected to the Jersey City Council At-Large, becoming the first Indian American ever elected to public office in the city’s history. Her victory signals a new era of representation and civic inclusion.

A Breakthrough Moment for the Community

Jersey City is often referred to as “Little India,” with its vibrant Indian India Square and thousands of Indian American residents spread across Journal Square and Exchange Place. Yet, despite decades of population growth and cultural influence, the community had never seen one of its own win a seat in City Hall. Singh’s election closes this long-standing gap and establishes a powerful milestone for visibility and political participation.

A Night of Political Transformation

Singh’s win came on a night dominated by sweeping political shifts. Reform-driven Councilmember James Solomon won the mayoral runoff with a resounding mandate. Still, for many in the diaspora, Singh’s triumph emerged as the most meaningful story of the evening. Her victory marks not only personal success but also a collective moment of pride and empowerment for Indian Americans in Jersey City.

Campaign Focused on Families and Stability

Running on Solomon’s Team Solomon slate with Rolando Lavarro and Michael Griffin, Singh brought forward a platform that emphasized stabilizing property taxes, expanding youth recreation programs, and strengthening services for working families. Transitioning from campaigning to governance, she aims to build trust through practical reforms and community-first decision-making.

Community Advocate Turned Public Servant

Beyond policy, Singh’s roots in grassroots advocacy have earned admiration and trust. She founded JCFamilies, one of the city’s most active nonprofit organizations supporting women, children, and working parents. She also launched Indians in Jersey City, a cultural and community forum that helps immigrant families integrate, celebrates Indian traditions, and builds bridges between cultures.

Over the years, Singh became a well-known voice for families navigating school systems, city services, and community resources. Her ability to unite newly arrived immigrants and longtime residents ultimately helped propel her to public office.

A Historic Win with Lasting Impact

As Singh stood alongside Solomon’s decisive victory over former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, the night showcased not just political change, but social progress. For the Indian American community, her election represents both a long-awaited recognition and a hopeful pathway to greater representation in civic life.
