Muhammad Akbar Ali Wins Runoff on December 2nd, Set to Become Georgia’s Youngest Legislator. Democratic candidate Muhammad Akbar Ali won the December 2nd runoff election for the Georgia House District 106 seat. He defeated fellow Democrat Marqus Cole. With this victory, Ali, at just 21, is set to become the youngest legislator currently serving in Georgia, taking the title from Democratic Rep. Bryce Berry of Atlanta.

House District 106 covers a southwestern portion of Gwinnett County. The seat was previously held by Snellville Democrat Shelly Hutchinson, who stepped down earlier this year to care for a family member. Both Ali and Cole advanced to the December 2nd runoff after emerging as the top two candidates in a three-way special election last month.

Ali, who works as a graphic designer and formerly served as first vice chair of the Gwinnett County Democratic Party, centered his campaign on lowering the cost of living, supporting public schools, and protecting immigrant and LGBTQ rights. His endorsements came from key figures in Georgia’s Democratic establishment, including Hutchinson, House Minority Caucus Whip Sam Park, and former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes.

Cole, organizing director at an energy and environmental nonprofit, focused on increasing access to healthcare, expanding affordable housing, and investing in public education. He received support from state Sen. Nikki Merritt of Grayson and Gwinnett Solicitor General Lisamarie Bristol.

Although Cole finished first in the November 4th special election, Ali surged past him in the December 2nd results. He secured approximately 54% of the more than 1,700 votes cast in what was a low-turnout runoff.

“Tonight, I am deeply honored and humbled by the trust the voters of Georgia House District 106 have placed in me,” Ali said in a statement following the results. “This victory belongs to all of us.”
