New OCI Portal Launched by HM Amit Shah; PM Modi Hails It as a Boost to Digital Governance

In a major push towards digital governance and user-centric public services, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi praised the launch of the revamped Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Portal, calling it “a major step forward in boosting citizen-friendly digital governance.”

A Digital Leap for Overseas Citizens of India

The Prime Minister, in response to Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah’s announcement on X, highlighted the portal’s enhanced features and improved functionality that are expected to simplify and streamline the experience for millions of OCI cardholders across the globe.

Empowering Global Indian Diaspora

At the official launch event held in New Delhi, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to providing world-class immigration and consular facilities to OCI cardholders. He stated,

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India is continuously striving to ensure that our Indian-origin citizens living abroad face no inconvenience when visiting or residing in India.”

The event was attended by senior officials including the Union Home Secretary and Director of the Intelligence Bureau.

What’s New in the OCI Portal?

The revamped OCI Portal introduces a range of user-friendly features aimed at improving the registration process and overall user experience. These include:

  • User Dashboard: View both completed and partially filled applications.
  • Auto-fill Profiles: Faster registration with automatic user detail population.
  • Integrated Payment Gateway: Smooth payment experience, especially for FRRO applicants.
  • Smart Document Uploads: Categorized uploads based on application type.
  • In-Built Tools: Image cropping and application editing before final submission.
  • Real-Time Reminders: Prompt verification before submission to minimize errors.
  • Integrated FAQs: Instant answers within the portal.

Technical Upgrades for Better Performance

In addition to user-focused improvements, the portal features robust technical upgrades, including:

  • Infrastructure Modernization: High availability through load-balanced servers on RedHat 9.
  • Software Upgrades: Latest versions of JDK, Struts 2.5.30, and Bootstrap 5.3.0 for device compatibility.
  • Cybersecurity: SSL/TLS encryption, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), server hardening, and regular penetration testing.
  • Responsive Design: Optimized for all devices with faster load times.
  • Automated Processes: Streamlined backend operations for faster turnaround.
  • Centralized Data Management: More efficient access and storage of data.

Supporting a Global Community

The OCI scheme, introduced in 2005 through an amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955, allows eligible Persons of Indian Origin to register as Overseas Citizens of India. Over 5 million people are already part of this initiative, with the previous portal operational in over 180 Indian missions and 12 FRROs, processing approximately 2,000 applications daily.

With increasing feedback and evolving technology, the government recognized the need for a more efficient, accessible, and secure platform. This revamped portal is the answer to that call.

One Portal, Multiple Benefits

Now live at the existing URL https://ociservices.gov.in, the portal reflects India’s commitment to digital excellence and diaspora inclusion.

Through advanced features and intuitive design, the new OCI portal is set to become a benchmark in digital consular services, making it easier than ever for Indian-origin citizens to stay connected with their roots.

With this digital milestone, India reaffirms its dedication to serving its global citizens—securely, swiftly, and seamlessly.
