According to a recent analysis by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) and the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, India has secured the third rank for immigrant surgeons, doctors, and physicians working in the United States. This data is highlighted in the “Immigrant Healthcare Index,” which examines the demographics of actively employed immigrant healthcare professionals in the US.

India Ranks Third for Immigrant Healthcare Professionals

India Leads in Healthcare Workforce

India is not only prominent in the medical field. It also leads in the overall healthcare workforce. Remilty’s Immigrant Healthcare Index, reveals that about 26.5% of immigrant healthcare professionals in the US are Indian. This includes various roles such as doctors, surgeons, physicians, and even nursing assistants.

Comparison with Other Countries

Only 16% of the immigrant doctor population in the US are from China or Hong Kong, amounting to around 16,000 doctors. Pakistani origin make up approximately 5%, with around 13,000 immigrant doctors practicing primarily in New Jersey, New York, and Florida, which are the top states for immigrant doctors.

The analysis underscores the significant presence of Indian professionals in the US healthcare system. Out of the 3.41 million actively employed healthcare professionals in the US, a substantial portion is of Indian origin.
