SABA Ohio and SABA North America Issue Joint Statement Against Racism Targeting Ohio’s New Solicitor General Mathura Sridharan: The South Asian Bar Association (SABA) of Ohio and SABA North America have condemned the wave of racist and xenophobic abuse aimed at Mathura Sridharan, Ohio’s newly appointed 12th Solicitor General.

Last week, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Sridharan’s appointment, praising her “sharp legal mind” and “exceptional courtroom record”. As the state’s top appellate lawyer, she will represent Ohio in some of its most high-profile legal battles, including cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and other state and federal courts.

Online Abuse Following Historic Appointment

However, Sridharan’s historic achievement was quickly overshadowed by a surge of racist online comments. Trolls targeted her Indian heritage, questioned her eligibility for the senior legal post due to her “non-Western name”, and mocked her for wearing a bindi in her official photo.

In response, SABA Ohio and SABA North America issued a joint statement, calling the attacks “unacceptable, un-American, and contrary to the values of justice and equality”.

The organizations emphasized that the personal heritage of a public servant should never overshadow their qualifications or professional merit.

Strong Support from Legal Community

The legal community has rallied behind Sridharan. Colleagues and fellow attorneys described her as a “brilliant, dedicated public servant” who has earned her role through hard work and consistent legal excellence.

Broader Conversation on Diversity in Law

This incident has reignited discussions about diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, particularly for women of color in high-ranking positions. Advocacy groups are urging state officials to address online harassment more robustly, ensuring public servants can perform their duties without fear of discrimination.

Attorney General Yost also defended Sridharan, stating, “Mathura is the most qualified person for this job, and she will serve the people of Ohio with honor and skill.”

About SABA Ohio and SABA North America

SABA Ohio represents South Asian legal professionals in the state, while SABA North America serves as a national voice for nearly 9,000 lawyers of South Asian descent. Both organizations advocate for diversity, fight against bias, and promote equal opportunities in the legal sector.
