Sharmila Mona Sinha Becomes Only the Second Woman of Indian Origin Inducted into the U.S. National Women’s Hall of Fame”: Sharmila “Mona” Sinha has made history by becoming only the second woman of Indian origin to be inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in the United States, following Indra Nooyi, the former Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo.

Sinha was inducted as part of the 2026 National Women’s Hall of Fame class, joining an elite group of women whose achievements have made a lasting impact on American society and the world.

Her induction represents a major milestone for the Indian-American community and recognises decades of work in women’s rights, philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, leadership and legal reform.

From Kolkata to Global Leadership

Sinha’s journey began in Kolkata, India, before she moved to the United States to pursue higher education and build an international career.

She attended Smith College, where she studied economics and art history, and later earned an MBA from Columbia Business School.

Her professional career began in investment banking at Morgan Stanley before she moved into corporate leadership, gaining experience with major companies including Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Elizabeth Arden.

That business background later became an important foundation for her work in philanthropy and social impact.

Turning Success Into Social Impact

Sinha has dedicated much of her career to advancing opportunities for women and girls.

She became a leader of Women Moving Millions, a global philanthropic community focused on mobilising major resources for women’s rights and equality.

Her work has helped direct significant philanthropic capital toward organisations working on women’s leadership, economic opportunity, legal equality and social justice.

She also co-founded Raising Change, an organisation that helps social-impact organisations strengthen their fundraising and organisational capacity.

At Smith College, Sinha served as a trustee and helped lead the Women for the World campaign, which raised hundreds of millions of dollars.

Leading Equality Now

Since 2022, Sinha has served as Chief Executive Officer of Equality Now, an international organisation dedicated to ending legal discrimination against women and girls.

Her work has addressed issues including child marriage, sexual violence, gender discrimination and women’s economic and legal rights.

Under her leadership and through broader Equality Now initiatives, efforts have contributed to legal reforms in countries around the world.

Her approach combines advocacy, philanthropy, coalition building and institutional change, with a focus on creating lasting improvements rather than temporary solutions.

More Than $1 Billion Mobilised

Sinha’s influence extends across the global philanthropic and social-impact community.

She has helped mobilise more than $1 billion toward initiatives supporting women’s rights and social change and has worked with numerous organisations seeking to strengthen women’s leadership and equality.

Her work demonstrates how business expertise and philanthropy can be used to support systemic change and empower communities.

A Distinguished 2026 Hall of Fame Class

Sinha was inducted alongside an accomplished group of women in the 2026 National Women’s Hall of Fame class.

The class includes prominent figures from government, athletics, science, literature, education, philanthropy and social activism.

Among the contemporary honourees are former U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Olympic champion Jackie Joyner-Kersee, alongside other influential women.

The National Women’s Hall of Fame was founded in 1969 in Seneca Falls, New York, and has become one of the country’s most prominent institutions dedicated to recognising women’s achievements.

Following the Legacy of Indra Nooyi

Sinha’s induction is particularly significant for Indian-origin Americans because she follows Indra Nooyi, the former Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, as the only other woman of Indian origin to receive the National Women’s Hall of Fame honour.

Nooyi, who was born in Chennai, India, became one of the world’s most influential corporate leaders during her tenure at PepsiCo and was widely recognised for her leadership and contributions to business.

Sinha’s achievement adds another chapter to the story of Indian-origin women reaching the highest levels of American leadership and influence.

From corporate America to international women’s rights advocacy, her career has demonstrated how leadership can extend beyond professional success to create broader social change.

With her induction, Sharmila Mona Sinha joins Indra Nooyi as only the second woman of Indian origin honoured by the U.S. National Women’s Hall of Fame — a historic achievement for Sinha and a significant moment for the Indian-American community.
