The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) hosted its first-ever Ayurveda & Wellness Retreat at The Raj Resort and Maharishi International University (MIU) in Fairfield, Iowa. Held from November 12–16, 2025, the retreat marked a milestone in integrative healthcare, bringing together physicians and their families for a holistic immersion in Ayurveda.

A Sold-Out Immersive Wellness Experience
The event sold out, welcoming 25 physician couples for a personalized experience. “It’s both remarkable and ironic that it took us this long to formally embrace Ayurveda, a tradition nurtured here at The Raj for over 30 years,” said AAPI President Dr. Amit Chakrabarty. “We’re thrilled to finally bridge this gap and offer our members a handcrafted retreat designed to rejuvenate body, mind, and spirit.”

Participants received therapies such as Abhyanga (herbal oil massage) and Shirodhara (warm oil therapy), along with daily yoga, meditation, and Pranayama sessions. “It’s rare to find a program that so seamlessly integrates scientific rigor with ancient wisdom,” noted Dr. Amit Shah, one of the retreat’s organizers.
Culture, Cuisine, and Community
The retreat showcased India’s rich traditions, featuring evening performances by Indian musicians and dancers. Culinary highlights included Satvik meals prepared by Indian chefs, offering healthy and mindful nourishment. “This retreat is about addressing the growing stress and burnout among medical professionals,” Dr. Chakrabarty emphasized. “We want our members to leave feeling truly revitalized.”
Scientifically-Aligned Wellness
Attendees consulted with experienced Ayurveda Vaidyas and explored Transcendental Meditation (TM), which is recommended by the American Heart Association and American Medical Association for hypertension management. The program encouraged lifestyle-based healing, vitality, longevity, and overall wellness.
CME Sessions on Integrative Medicine
On November 15–16, MIU faculty led Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions focusing on Ayurveda’s consciousness-based principles. The sessions covered foundational concepts of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, as well as dietary, lifestyle, and integrative strategies for inflammation and chronic diseases. “These sessions are designed to equip physicians with practical tools to incorporate Ayurveda into their clinical practice,” said Dr. Arti Prasad, a key organizer.
Cultural Highlights and Unique Experiences
A classical music performance by Dr. Aarti Pandya delighted audiences, while a Bharatanatyam recital by Fairfield-raised therapist Rebecca showcased traditional Indian dance. Participants also toured The Raj Panchakarma facility and MIU campus, including the celebrated Golden Domes where hundreds meditate collectively. MIU faculty described the experience as “a scientifically measurable positive influence on the environment.”
Guests enjoyed shopping at the Maharishi Ayurveda Products and Gift Store, adding another layer to the holistic retreat.
Affordable Access to Elite Wellness
AAPI secured a premium package at less than half its standard cost, making the elite retreat widely accessible. “With 15 spots already booked before the official announcement, it’s clear that interest in integrative health among medical professionals is surging,” Dr. Shah observed.
Preserving Vedic Legacy in the U.S.
Founded 33 years ago using Vedic architecture (Vastu), The Raj has pioneered the integration of Ayurveda in America. Organizers, including owners Candace and Rogers Badgett and MIU faculty, intend to continue hosting retreats that honor India’s ancient healing sciences.
“We will continue to uphold and promote this tradition in the years ahead,” affirmed Dr. Chakrabarty. “This is more than just a retreat; it’s a new era for holistic health initiatives in the U.S. We invite physicians and their families to join us on this ongoing journey toward integrated well-being.”
