Thousands Gather at Trafalgar Square as London Mayor Sadiq Khan Joins Diwali Festivities. Trafalgar Square came alive with colour, culture, and celebration as thousands gathered on Sunday to mark Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The 23rd edition of the annual event, organized by the Diwali in London Committee and the Mayor of London, brought together around 10,000 attendees, creating a joyous atmosphere in central London. London Mayor Sadiq Khan joined in the celebrations, underscoring the event’s message of unity, light, and resilience.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan was joined by Sujit Ghosh, India’s Deputy High Commissioner to the U.K., who expressed gratitude to the Mayor and Indian community groups for organizing this annual Diwali celebration, reflecting the UK’s cultural diversity and inclusion, and wished everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous Deepawali.

Diwali festivities at Trafalgar Square captivated the crowd with a dazzling showcase of dance, music, and cultural workshops. Hundreds of dancers dressed in vibrant, multicoloured saris led lively performances, enchanting locals and tourists alike. Attendees also enjoyed live music, comedy shows, yoga sessions, and interactive workshops, including sari and turban-tying demonstrations.

Mayor Sadiq Khan shared the significance of the festival with the audience, saying, “There’s a very simple reason why we’re all celebrating the festival of Diwali. This celebration is a celebration of the victory of lightness over dark, the victory of good over evil, and the victory of friendship over enmity.” His words resonated with the crowd, which included members of the UK’s Asian community, tourists, and local residents who joined in the cultural festivities.

This year, as Diwali approaches, celebrations are lighting up cities worldwide. On October 20, New York City’s Times Square also held its own grand Diwali celebration, attracting scores of Indian community members and US citizens who gathered to honour the festival.

With its spirit of inclusivity and joy, London’s Diwali celebration at Trafalgar Square once again highlighted the rich diversity and unity that defines the city.
