Trump Proposes Automatic Green Cards for Foreign Students if Re-elected. Former US President Donald Trump has announced a bold proposal that could significantly impact the future of foreign students in America.
In a recent podcast with two Silicon Valley investors, Trump stated that if re-elected, his administration will implement a program to automatically grant Green Cards to foreign students upon their graduation from American colleges and universities.
This initiative, if realized, could greatly benefit students from India, the second-largest source of international students in the United States. Indian students, along with those from China, who collectively represent 53 percent of all foreign students enrolled in 2023, stand to gain the most from Trump’s proposal.
However, the Trump campaign has already added a caveat to the former President’s comments. They emphasized that the program will incorporate an “aggressive vetting process” aimed at excluding individuals deemed undesirable. This vetting will target “all communists, radical Islamists, Hamas supporters, America haters, and public charges,” referring to foreigners who might rely on government assistance.
During the podcast, when prompted to commit to attracting the world’s best and brightest to the United States, Trump responded affirmatively. He elaborated, “What I will do is – you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a Green Card to be able to stay in this country, and that includes junior colleges.”
Trump’s proposal underscores a significant shift in immigration policy, one that could transform the landscape for international students aspiring to build their futures in America. As the 2024 election approaches, this pledge will likely be a key talking point in Trump’s campaign, drawing both support and scrutiny from various quarters.
