UPI Goes Global, Expands to 11 Countries as July Transactions Reach ₹29.87 Lakh Crore: India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has expanded its international footprint to 11 countries (Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, Maldives), marking another major milestone for the country’s digital payments ecosystem. At the same time, UPI processed transactions worth ₹29.87 lakh crore in July 2026, according to information released by the government.

The latest figures highlight the rapid scale of India’s digital payments infrastructure and the growing international acceptance of UPI, an interoperable payment system that enables instant bank-to-bank transactions.

₹29.87 Lakh Crore Equals ₹29.87 Trillion

The ₹29.87 lakh crore processed by UPI in July is equivalent to approximately ₹29.87 trillion or ₹29.87 million crore.

In international terms, ₹29.87 lakh crore = ₹29.87 trillion. The figure represents the combined value of UPI transactions processed during the month.

UPI also recorded approximately 23.66 billion transactions, underlining the enormous scale at which India’s real-time payment infrastructure is operating.

UPI’s International Footprint

UPI’s expansion to 11 countries (Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, Maldives) represents a significant step in India’s efforts to take its digital public infrastructure beyond its domestic market. Greece and the Maldives are among the latest additions to the international UPI network.

The system’s international expansion allows Indian travellers and, depending on the market and participating institutions, consumers and merchants overseas to benefit from easier digital payments and cross-border payment connectivity.

From India’s Digital Revolution to a Global Model

Launched in 2016, UPI has transformed the way Indians make everyday payments—from small purchases and utility bills to large commercial transactions. Ten years later, the platform has become one of the world’s largest real-time payment systems.

The government’s latest figures also show the scale of UPI’s domestic adoption. In financial year 2025-26, UPI processed 24,161.69 crore transactions worth ₹314.23 lakh crore, while the number of users had reached 55.49 crore by June 2026.

The growth has increasingly positioned UPI as an example of India’s digital public infrastructure and a potential model for countries seeking fast, interoperable and accessible payment systems.

India’s Digital Payments Story Enters a New Phase

The expansion comes as UPI marks its 10th anniversary, with its transaction volumes having grown dramatically since its launch. The platform’s increasing presence overseas suggests that India’s digital payments story is moving from domestic transformation to international influence.

With UPI now available across 11 countries and monthly transaction values approaching ₹30 trillion, India is increasingly demonstrating how interoperable digital infrastructure can reshape financial transactions at population scale.

UPI’s journey from an Indian payment innovation to an increasingly global digital payments platform represents one of the most significant developments in India’s fintech and digital economy story.
