White House Launches America.gov to Create a Single Digital Gateway for Federal Government Services: The White House has launched America.gov, a new digital platform designed to provide Americans with a single entry point for accessing federal government information and services.
President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to integrate eligible online services with America.gov, with the administration describing the initiative as a major effort to simplify how people interact with the federal government.
The platform is intended to reduce the need for Americans to search through numerous agency websites, interpret government terminology and repeatedly provide information when seeking federal services. Under the executive order, America.gov is envisioned as a secure, intelligent and service-oriented digital front door to the federal government.
AI-Powered Government Access
America.gov uses artificial intelligence and AI-enhanced search technology to allow users to communicate with the government in plain language. The White House says users can ask questions and receive current information about federal services through the platform.
The General Services Administration said America.gov combines information from more than 29,000 government websites with AI-enhanced search technology, giving users a centralized way to find information and assistance.
The White House says the platform is designed to eventually allow users, where authorized and technically feasible, to complete government transactions without having to navigate multiple agency websites.
From Information to Transactions
The initiative is being developed as more than a conventional government search engine. The executive order calls for America.gov to provide a conversational interface through which users can discover federal services, obtain information and, where available, complete transactions.
Services highlighted by the administration include assistance related to passport services, Medicare, Social Security and other federal programs. The White House fact sheet says the platform currently provides answers to users’ questions, with additional transactional capabilities expected as federal agencies integrate their services.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at the launch that Americans will be able to use America.gov for first-time passport applications beginning in 2027, as the platform’s capabilities expand.
Federal Agencies Given 90-Day Implementation Framework
The executive order directs the Office of Management and Budget to issue implementation guidance to federal agencies within 90 days.
Agencies are required to identify qualifying public-facing services, integrate those services with America.gov in a secure and privacy-preserving manner, and make existing application programming interfaces, dashboards and digital forms accessible through the platform where applicable.
The initiative also builds on a separate August 2026 OMB policy establishing Login.gov as the government’s universal sign-on for most public-facing federal services. The America.gov order calls for integrating Login.gov into the new platform.
Privacy and Agency Responsibilities
Despite the centralized entry point, the executive order states that individual federal agencies will retain custody and control of their records, systems, statutory responsibilities and adjudicatory authority.
It also says that bringing services together through America.gov should not create a centralized federal system of records about Americans. The order calls for data minimization, secure authentication, auditable authorization and privacy protections consistent with applicable law.
The order further specifies that existing methods of accessing federal services—including in-person assistance, telephone, mail and agency-specific digital services—will remain available. America.gov is intended to provide an additional option rather than become the sole channel for government services.
A New Model for Digital Government
The launch represents a broader push toward consolidating federal digital services around the needs of users rather than the organizational structure of government agencies.
Instead of requiring citizens to determine which federal department handles a particular issue, America.gov is designed to let users describe what they need and receive guidance toward the appropriate service.
The administration’s broader digital strategy includes efforts to standardize government websites, authentication, accessibility, interoperability, security and user experience.
As federal agencies begin the integration process, the effectiveness of America.gov will depend on how quickly services can be connected, how accurately its AI systems provide information, and how the government maintains privacy, security and access to traditional service channels.
For Americans, the initiative marks a significant shift toward a single digital gateway for navigating the federal government, with additional services expected to become available as the program develops.
