Yogi Yogendra Puranik Ceremonially Confers Prestigious State Award upon Sir Kazuyoshi Aoyama in Tsuchiura City: In a moment of profound honour and cultural significance, Yogendra Puranik, widely known as Yogi よぎ, ceremonially conferred the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette (瑞寳小綬章) upon Sir Kazuyoshi Aoyama (88) of Tsuchiura City for his lifelong contributions to academic excellence. This prestigious state award, conferred by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. It was presented on behalf of His Excellency Mr. Shigeru Ishiba, Honorable Prime Minister of Japan.
Yogi よぎ is an eminent social worker, public speaker, and writer. Notably, he holds the distinction of being Japan’s first Asian-origin MLA, the first Indian-origin civil services officer, and the first foreign-origin public school principal. Currently, he serves as Head of Edu-DX Com at the Government of Ibaraki and as a business advisor, contributing to educational and economic development initiatives across Japan.
Speaking about the ceremony, Yogi reflected, “To receive a state honour is undoubtedly a great privilege. Yet, to stand on the other side and bestow such an honour is a distinction of an even more profound nature. This has been one of the best moments of my life, a recognition I will cherish forever.”
The ceremony was conducted with meticulous attention to tradition, as is customary in Japan. Yogi shared how he received detailed instructions on the protocol for handing over the medal and certificate, including wearing white clean gloves to ensure the medal and documents remained spotless, free from any fingerprints. “The whole experience was amazing, and that is what I like about Japan — the discipline, precision, and deep respect embedded in every gesture,” he added.
During this occasion, Yogi took the opportunity to present his biographical essay book to Aoyama Sensei, symbolising not just a meeting of generations but also the bridging of cultures. The book chronicles his journey from India to becoming a pioneering figure in Japanese society, inspiring countless youth and professionals from the Indian diaspora and beyond.
Yogi’s achievements highlight the strong and growing ties between India and Japan, showcasing how the Indian diaspora continues to play a vital role in strengthening international cultural and educational relations. His leadership in education and public service continues to open pathways for greater understanding, collaboration, and innovation between the two nations.
As Yogi concluded his reflections on the ceremony, he expressed his commitment to continue working towards inclusive education, public welfare, and international cooperation. “We must use every recognition and opportunity to serve with humility and create positive change in society,” he said.
