Safrina Latheef Becomes First Kerala Woman, Indian Expat from Qatar to Conquer Mount Everest: Safrina Latheef has made history by becoming the first woman from Kerala and the first Indian expat woman from Qatar to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Her remarkable achievement marks a milestone in women’s empowerment and the growing spirit of adventure in the Middle East and South Asia.
At 38, Safrina reached the peak of the world’s highest mountain on May 18, 2025, after more than 20 hours of relentless climbing. Her success symbolizes strength, determination, and perseverance, inspiring women across generations.

From Cake Artist to Mountaineer
Safrina’s transformation is extraordinary. Born in Saudi Arabia and raised in Qatar, she once led a quiet life as a cake artist and homemaker. Over the years, she began exploring nature through hiking trips with her husband, Dr. Shameel Musthafa, which ignited her passion for the outdoors.
When travel restrictions during the pandemic limited international trips, Safrina focused on fitness, running, and clean living. That period of self-discipline laid the foundation for her mountaineering journey. As international borders reopened, she turned her attention to mountains instead of cities, beginning a life-changing chapter.

Climbing the World’s Highest Peaks
Safrina’s mountaineering career began with Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, followed by Aconcagua in Argentina. These climbs prepared her physically and mentally for Everest. Her training spanned nearly four years and involved endurance building, strength conditioning, and high-altitude preparation.
To overcome her fear of heights, she practiced crossing suspension bridges, preparing for the challenging Khumbu Icefall on Everest. Each climb added to her mental toughness and physical stamina, essential for facing extreme weather and thin oxygen levels.

Preparation and Support
Safrina trained under a dedicated mountaineering coach, combining cardio, resistance, and altitude simulation workouts. She followed a strict diet and focused on developing mental resilience. Support from her husband and family remained her biggest motivation.
She drew inspiration from regional pioneers such as Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani, who completed the Seven Summits, and Sheikha Asma Al Thani, who broke barriers in mountaineering. Safrina also received guidance from experienced climbers in Qatar and Kerala, who shared valuable insights about Everest’s unpredictable conditions.

Challenges and Triumphs
The climb tested Safrina’s physical endurance and emotional strength. Facing harsh temperatures, altitude sickness, and exhaustion, she kept pushing forward. She developed mild frostbite but continued to climb with determination.
Above Camp 4, she witnessed the dangers of Everest firsthand, yet she remained composed and focused on reaching the summit. The support of her Sherpa guides played a crucial role, providing expertise and reassurance throughout the journey.
A Historic Moment
Safrina reached the summit at dawn, experiencing a breathtaking view of endless mountain ranges. Her success became a symbol of courage and empowerment for women everywhere. She carried the pride of Kerala and Qatar to the top of the world, representing a new generation of adventurers.
Her achievement not only adds her name to history but also opens doors for other women aspiring to enter the world of adventure sports. Her accomplishment stands as proof that discipline and belief can overcome any obstacle.

Inspiring Future Generations
Following her historic climb, Safrina shared her story at the Aspire2Inspire event in Doha on October 3, 2025. The event, led by Dr. Femida Ali, celebrated women who embody strength and resilience. Safrina encouraged women to pursue challenges, take action, and believe in their potential.
She is now planning to mentor women interested in trekking and mountaineering. Her vision is to create a network that connects women from Qatar, Kerala, and other regions who share a passion for the outdoors.
Safrina’s journey is more than a mountaineering milestone. It is a testament to human willpower and the limitless potential of women who dare to dream beyond boundaries. Her story continues to inspire, reminding everyone that courage, persistence, and self-belief can take you to the highest peaks — both in life and in spirit.
