Doly Begum Makes History as First Bangladesh-Origin Federal MP in Canada: In a landmark moment for diversity in Canadian politics, Doly Begum has become the first Bangladesh-origin politician elected as a federal Member of Parliament in Canada. Her decisive victory in the Scarborough Southwest federal by-election on April 13 marks a significant milestone for representation within the country’s political landscape.

Begum, a former New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Scarborough Southwest, secured nearly 70 percent of the total vote, reflecting overwhelming support from her constituents. However, voter turnout remained relatively low, with only about one-third of eligible voters participating in the by-election.

Addressing supporters after her victory, Begum highlighted the unity behind her campaign. “Tonight, we celebrate something so powerful — a community coming together, putting aside their differences to choose hope, compassion, and progress,” she said during her speech.

The by-election results also strengthened the position of the Liberal Party of Canada, which secured victories in all three federal by-elections held on Monday night. The wins brought the party’s total to 174 seats in Parliament, surpassing the 172 seats required to form a majority government.

Begum’s rise in politics has been marked by rapid progress. First elected in 2018 at the age of 29, she became the youngest member of the NDP caucus. Her leadership abilities were soon recognized, and she was later appointed deputy party leader.

Her transition from provincial to federal politics signals a new chapter, not only in her career but also in the broader narrative of immigrant representation in Canada. As she prepares to take her seat in Ottawa, Begum’s victory is being celebrated as a reflection of Canada’s evolving multicultural identity and the growing influence of diverse communities in shaping the nation’s future.
