Young Chai Champion Raises $5,163 for Cancer Council in Memory of Nana (Grandfather): While most eight-year-olds spend their weekends playing games or watching cartoons, young Prahar chose to spend his time helping cancer patients and their families.
The remarkable youngster raised $5,163 for the Cancer Council through his own Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser, serving homemade masala chai to supporters in memory of his late grandfather, affectionately known as “Nana.”
Prahar’s inspiring initiative began with a simple idea: if he could make tea and bring people together, he could help support those affected by cancer.
“No matter how small you are, you can always make a difference,” said Prahar, whose determination and compassion have captured the hearts of his community.
The fundraiser held special significance for the young boy. After losing his grandfather to liver cancer, Prahar wanted to honor his memory in a meaningful way.
“My Nana inspired me very much to host this tea party. I wanted to dedicate this to him,” he said.
Prahar’s passion for the cause was nurtured over several years. At the age of five, he watched his mother, Harita Mehta, host a Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea event and learned how community fundraising could help support cancer research and patient services.
This year, he decided it was his turn to make a contribution.
After registering for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in May, Prahar embarked on a month-long fundraising campaign. He spoke to friends, family members, teachers, fellow Scouts, and local community members, encouraging them to support the cause.
“He was very excited from the beginning,” said his mother, Harita Mehta. “He even gave a speech at his father’s office explaining why he wanted to raise funds for cancer patients.”
The highlight of the campaign came on May 24, when Prahar hosted his tea party at the 4th Kingsgrove Scout Hall. Guests gathered to enjoy authentic masala chai while learning about the importance of supporting cancer research and care.
Standing confidently before the audience, Prahar demonstrated how to prepare his signature chai.
“I used boiling water, milk, tea leaves, sugar, spices, ginger, cardamom – and don’t forget, love,” he told attendees.
The young fundraiser personally prepared tea for guests and delighted in seeing smiles on their faces.
“My favourite part was making tea for everyone and seeing all the happy faces,” Prahar said. “I loved meeting all those kind people. When everyone clapped for me, I felt like a superstar and a superhero.”
The community responded with overwhelming generosity. One cup of Prahar’s special masala chai was auctioned for $101, highlighting the enthusiasm of supporters and the impact of his mission.
Prahar continued raising funds until June 4, a date chosen deliberately to coincide with his grandfather’s death anniversary. The campaign became more than just a fundraiser—it evolved into a heartfelt tribute filled with love, remembrance, and hope.
When asked what kindness means to him, Prahar offered a response beyond his years.
“Kindness means helping others, accepting diversity, and caring for them,” he said.
Cancer Council representatives and community members praised the youngster’s efforts, noting that his story demonstrates how individuals of any age can make a meaningful contribution to society.
Prahar’s achievement serves as a powerful reminder that compassion, determination, and community spirit can create extraordinary results. Through a simple cup of chai, he not only honored his grandfather’s legacy but also helped support thousands of Australians affected by cancer.
In an age often dominated by headlines of conflict and division, Prahar’s story is a refreshing reminder that kindness remains one of the most powerful forces for change.
At just eight years old, Prahar has shown that heroes come in all sizes—and sometimes, they serve chai.
