Australia’s Work and Holiday Visa Ballot Opens New Pathways for Young Indians: Australia has introduced a visa ballot system for young applicants from India, China and Vietnam seeking their first Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa, as demand for places under the program exceeds available annual allocations.
The Australian Government says the ballot is designed to provide a fair, streamlined and transparent random selection process for applicants from high-demand partner countries. The system applies specifically to first-time subclass 462 applicants.
India Among Countries Covered
For the 2026–27 program year, India, China and Vietnam are included in the ballot system. Registration for the 2026–27 ballot opened on June 4, 2026, and closed on June 25, 2026, with the country ballots currently listed as closed.
The selection period, however, runs from July 2, 2026, through April 30, 2027 for all three countries. The government may conduct one or more random selections during this period.
Who Can Participate?
Applicants must generally be between 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, at the time of registration, hold a valid passport from an eligible country and have a valid national identity card. They must also have a valid email address, verify their email and pay the AUD25 registration fee.
For Indian passport holders, the Australian Government specifies that applicants must hold a valid PAN card rather than an Aadhaar card as their national identity document for the ballot process.
Random Selection, Not First-Come, First-Served
Unlike a conventional visa application process, selection is conducted through a random, automated system. The government says the system does not use individual selection criteria. Applicants who are selected receive a notification by email and are invited to apply for the visa through their ImmiAccount.
Being selected, however, does not guarantee a visa. Selected applicants must still meet all eligibility requirements for the Work and Holiday visa.
Those selected have 28 calendar days from notification to submit their visa application. The deadline is calculated according to Australian Eastern Standard Time.
Registration Remains in the Selection Pool
Registrations can remain in the selection pool until April 30, 2027, unless the applicant is selected, withdraws the registration or turns 31.
Applicants who are not selected will not be eligible to apply for a first subclass 462 visa through that ballot during the program year, and the government says it will not notify unsuccessful applicants individually. The AUD25 registration fee is also non-refundable.
Application Through ImmiAccount
The entire ballot registration process is online. Applicants use Australia’s ImmiAccount system, select “Visa pre-application registration” and then choose the “Registration – Work and Holiday Visa (462)” form.
Applicants are advised to ensure that their personal information, passport details and national identity information are accurate. Certain details, including the country of passport and national ID number, cannot be changed after submission.
Opportunity for Young Indians
The ballot represents a significant opportunity for eligible young Indians seeking international work and travel experience in Australia. At the same time, the randomized system means registration itself does not guarantee an invitation to apply.
The Australian Government says the ballot system applies only to first Work and Holiday (subclass 462) applicants from China, India and Vietnam. It does not apply to second or third subclass 462 applicants or to applicants for Australia’s separate Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa.
For young Indian professionals and aspiring travelers, the key message is clear: eligibility and accurate registration are essential, but selection ultimately depends on the random ballot.
