Satya Nadella Receives National Medal of Technology and Innovation as Trump Honors Six Leading American Innovators: U.S. President Donald J. Trump has presented the National Medal of Technology and Innovation to Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella, recognizing his leadership in transforming one of America’s most influential technology companies and advancing the infrastructure behind the global artificial intelligence revolution.

Nadella was among six prominent innovators honored at the Science: A New Golden Age Summit, where President Trump presented the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, two of the United States’ highest honors for achievements in science and technology.

The recognition highlights Nadella’s role in repositioning Microsoft for the cloud computing era and expanding the hyperscale infrastructure that enables the training and worldwide deployment of advanced artificial intelligence systems.

The other honorees were Elon Musk, Sergey Brin, Jensen Huang, Lisa Su and Michael Dell, representing significant contributions across space exploration, information technology, semiconductor engineering, high-performance computing and enterprise technology.

Satya Nadella Recognized for Transforming Microsoft

Nadella received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation for what the official citation described as his transformative leadership of a critical American technology company, its rejuvenation for a new era of cloud computing, and his construction of hyperscale infrastructure that enabled the training and global deployment of American superintelligence.

Since becoming Microsoft’s chief executive in 2014, Nadella has led a major strategic transformation of the company, with an emphasis on cloud services, enterprise technology, developer platforms and artificial intelligence.

Under his leadership, Microsoft strengthened its position in cloud computing through Microsoft Azure and expanded its investments in the infrastructure required to support increasingly sophisticated AI applications.

The company’s cloud platform serves businesses, governments, research institutions and developers worldwide. Its infrastructure has also become an important component of the rapidly expanding market for generative AI and enterprise AI services.

Nadella’s leadership has helped position Microsoft at the intersection of cloud computing and artificial intelligence, two technologies increasingly central to economic competitiveness and digital transformation.

Six Innovators Honored for Scientific and Technological Leadership

The awards recognized six individuals whose work has influenced the development of modern computing, semiconductor technology, space systems and digital infrastructure.

National Medal of Science Recipients

Elon Musk was recognized for engineering achievements spanning space exploration, intelligent systems, communications and manufacturing. His work has contributed to developments in commercial spaceflight and advanced technology systems.

Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, was honored for foundational algorithms in information retrieval and data processing that transformed how people access information across science, commerce and everyday life.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, was recognized for advancing graphics processing units into general-purpose computing architectures. Innovations in processor design and software have helped enable massively parallel computation, scientific research and modern AI systems.

Lisa Su, chair and CEO of AMD, received recognition for her leadership in semiconductor engineering and high-performance computing. Her work in processor architecture and chiplet-based integration has contributed to advances in computational performance, including technologies used in exascale computing.

National Medal of Technology and Innovation Recipients

Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, was honored for advancing personal and enterprise computing, building a global technology company and supporting the next generation of American scientists, engineers and technology professionals.

Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO of Microsoft, was recognized for his leadership in transforming Microsoft’s business and expanding the hyperscale cloud infrastructure supporting advanced AI development and deployment.

Together, the recipients represent different but interconnected areas of technological progress, from foundational computing research and chip design to the large-scale infrastructure powering modern digital services.

Trump’s Vision for a New Golden Age of Science

The awards were presented as part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to strengthen American scientific and technological leadership.

The administration has highlighted priorities including artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology, nuclear energy, quantum computing and space exploration as areas central to the country’s future competitiveness.

The Science: A New Golden Age Summit brought together scientists, technology executives and other innovators to discuss the changing landscape of scientific discovery and the role of government, industry, universities and philanthropic organizations in accelerating research.

The initiative emphasizes the growing importance of private-sector investment in research and development, alongside collaboration between foundational science and commercial applications.

Michael Kratsios, assistant to the president and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, emphasized the importance of individual innovators in shaping future technological progress.

He said the medal recipients had transformed their respective fields and laid the foundations for technologies that have become integral to modern life.

Kratsios also stressed that scientific advancement depends on the insight and character of individuals, describing the honorees as architects of the future.

Science: A New Golden Age Initiative

The summit builds on the report Science: A New Golden Age, released in July 2026 by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The report presents a reassessment of the American science and technology enterprise in light of changes in how research is funded, conducted and commercialized.

It draws comparisons with Vannevar Bush’s influential 1945 report, Science: The Endless Frontier, which helped shape the development of the modern U.S. research system.

The newer initiative recognizes the increasing role of industry in research and development and the closer integration of foundational scientific research with practical applications.

Its recommendations include strengthening support for early-career scientists, pursuing ambitious national scientific missions, developing new funding models for transformative research and building systems to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of scientific research.

Another priority is expanding the use of artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery through the Genesis Mission.

The summit was designed to translate these recommendations into practical initiatives involving government agencies, technology companies, research institutions and other partners.

AI Infrastructure Becomes a Strategic Priority

Nadella’s recognition underscores the growing importance of cloud computing infrastructure in the development of advanced artificial intelligence.

Training and deploying large AI models require substantial computing capacity, advanced semiconductor systems, high-speed networking, data storage and energy-intensive data centers.

Technology companies are investing heavily in these resources as demand grows for AI assistants, enterprise automation, scientific computing and other applications.

Microsoft has positioned Azure as a central part of its AI strategy, providing computing infrastructure and services to businesses and developers. Its investments in data centers and AI capabilities reflect the broader competition among major technology companies to build the systems needed for next-generation computing.

The National Medal of Technology and Innovation recognition places Nadella’s leadership within a wider national conversation about the relationship between technology infrastructure, scientific progress and economic competitiveness.

It also highlights how cloud computing has evolved from a business technology into a foundation for research, industrial innovation and artificial intelligence.
