The Pakistani-American Public Affairs Committee (PAKPAC USA) endorsed Republican candidate Donald Trump for the upcoming U.S. presidential election, attributing its decision to alleged interference in Pakistan’s democratic processes under the Biden administration. PAKPAC USA claimed that a “legislative coup” orchestrated by the Biden-led administration facilitated the ousting of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from office.
In a public statement on X, PAKPAC USA expressed support for Trump, believing his leadership would strengthen U.S.-Pakistan relations and address what they called “Pakistan’s dangerous democratic backsliding.” The committee emphasized its commitment to democracy in Pakistan and clarified that it does not support specific political factions within the country.
Imran Khan was removed from office in 2022 following a successful no-confidence motion by opposition members. Khan has since accused the U.S. of backing his removal, citing his pursuit of an independent foreign policy as the motive. The U.S. State Department has denied these claims, stating, “There is absolutely no truth to these allegations.”
PAKPAC USA contends that Trump’s presidency included robust diplomatic engagements with Pakistan, contrasting the Biden administration’s approach. The statement referenced diplomatic missions by Trump’s officials to Pakistan, alleging that such initiatives have diminished under Biden’s term. The committee also warned that relations with Pakistan could further deteriorate if Vice President Harris were to take office, citing ongoing discussions with her campaign.
Trump, who met Khan during his presidency, is seen by PAKPAC USA as a leader who would “promote stronger diplomatic and economic ties” with Pakistan and ensure representation for Pakistani-American interests at the highest levels. The committee also pointed to international observations on election irregularities in Pakistan and criticized Biden’s administration for failing to address the imprisonment of Khan and other political detainees.
PAKPAC educates Pakistani-Americans on pressing policy debates and provides them a unique platform to influence these debates.
PAKPAC activities are governed by its National Board which elects a President for a two year term. Each member of the Board contributes at least $4,000 annually and is actively engaged in politics.
