AR Rahman Meets OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to Explore AI’s Role in Music Innovation: Global music icon A.R. Rahman recently visited the headquarters of OpenAI, where he met with CEO Sam Altman to discuss his groundbreaking project, Secret Mountain, and the wider potential of AI in music. This meeting marked a significant step in Rahman’s mission to integrate advanced technology with cultural creativity.

Secret Mountain is Rahman’s ambitious digital multimedia initiative featuring a “Meta band” – a virtual ensemble that combines music, technology, and storytelling. Set in a mystical world called Secret Mountain, the project follows Luna, its protagonist, as she interacts with other digital avatars or metahumans who reside and perform in this unique universe.
Empowering Indian Creators through AI
During the meeting, Rahman emphasised that Secret Mountain is more than just an entertainment product. It is designed to empower Indian creators by providing them with global platforms and technological tools to express their cultural narratives innovatively. The project reflects Rahman’s vision to uplift Indian minds through technology, positioning AI as a medium for cultural and creative expression.

Advocating Ethical Use of AI in Music
While Rahman champions AI’s integration into music, he has also voiced caution regarding its misuse. He compared unethical use of AI in recreating voices or music to “mixing poison with oxygen,” advocating for strict regulations to ensure ethical practices in the industry. Notably, Rahman recently used AI to recreate the voices of deceased singers Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed for the soundtrack of Lal Salaam, stirring debate on AI’s ethical boundaries in music.
Balancing Technology with Traditional Excellence
Despite his tech-focused ventures, Rahman continues to dominate traditional film music. His soundtrack for Chhaava, released in February 2025, was widely praised for its emotive depth. Meanwhile, fans are eagerly awaiting his upcoming score for Thug Life, directed by long-time collaborator Mani Ratnam, further cementing his relevance and versatility in the music industry.

Future of AI and Music
As AI reshapes creative industries worldwide, Rahman’s meeting with Altman signifies a growing intersection between technology leaders and cultural innovators. Together, they explored how AI can tackle generational challenges, transform storytelling, and democratise music creation for communities globally.
Rahman’s Secret Mountain is poised to set new standards for immersive, AI-integrated musical experiences, highlighting the limitless possibilities when technology and culture converge.
