First Indian American Kash Patel Sworn in as FBI Director, Takes Oath on Bhagavad Gita. In a historic moment, Kashyap “Kash” Pramod Patel was sworn in as the ninth director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Saturday, becoming the first Indian American to hold the prestigious position. The oath ceremony, held in the Indian Treaty Room of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House campus, was administered by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. Patel chose to take his oath on the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu text, marking a significant cultural milestone for the Indian American community.

Patel’s appointment, confirmed by a narrow 51-49 Senate vote on Thursday, has sparked both celebration and controversy. While former President Donald Trump hailed the decision, calling Patel “the best ever” for the role, Democrats expressed concerns about the potential politicization of the FBI under his leadership.

A Polarizing Confirmation

Patel, 44, a former counterterrorism prosecutor and chief of staff to the defense secretary, has been a vocal critic of the FBI. His close ties to Trump and his role in co-authoring a memo criticizing the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election have raised questions about his ability to maintain the agency’s independence.

Two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, joined Democrats in opposing his nomination. Senator Adam Schiff, a prominent Democrat, warned, “The FBI shouldn’t serve as Donald Trump’s army,” reflecting broader concerns about Patel’s allegiance to the former president.

In a statement following his confirmation, Patel sought to allay fears, vowing to restore trust in the agency. “My mission as Director is clear: let good cops be cops – and rebuild trust in the FBI,” he said.

A Journey from Gujarat to the FBI

Patel’s roots trace back to Bhadran, a small village in Gujarat’s Anand district. His family migrated to Uganda 70 to 80 years ago before eventually settling in the United States. According to community leaders, Patel’s ancestors were part of the Patidar community, and their family tree, maintained by the Chh Gam Patidar Mandal in Anand, records 18 generations.

Patel’s rise to one of the most powerful law enforcement positions in the U.S. is a testament to his determination and expertise. Born in New York to Gujarati immigrant parents, he pursued a career in law, serving as a federal defender and counterterrorism prosecutor before catching Trump’s attention during his first term.

A New Chapter for the FBI

As FBI director, Patel faces the daunting task of leading an agency still grappling with the fallout from high-profile investigations and internal controversies. His supporters argue that his experience and no-nonsense approach make him uniquely qualified to restore the FBI’s credibility. Critics, however, remain wary of his past criticisms of the agency and his alignment with Trump.
