Virat Kohli Makes History: Fastest to 15,000 ODI Runs, Smashes 55th Century in Record-Breaking 139 Against West Indies: Virat Kohli delivered a spectacular record-filled performance as India opened their three-match ODI series against the West Indies with an emphatic eight-wicket victory at the Greenfield International Stadium, September 28, 2026.
Chasing 296, India raced to 300 for 2 in 41.4 overs, with Kohli remaining unbeaten on 139 from just 88 balls. His explosive innings featured 10 fours and nine sixes, while Shubman Gill provided equally important support with a century of his own.
Kohli’s 139 not out was his 55th ODI century, further extending his record for most hundreds in men’s ODI cricket. He reached three figures in just 74 balls, the third-fastest ODI century of his career.
15,000 ODI Runs in Record Time
One of the biggest milestones of the night came when Kohli crossed 15,000 ODI runs, becoming only the second batter in men’s ODI history to reach the landmark after Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli achieved the feat in his 303rd ODI innings, surpassing Tendulkar’s previous mark of 377 innings and becoming the fastest player to the milestone.
The milestone was part of an extraordinary statistical haul for the former India captain.
Kohli also moved past Tendulkar’s tally of 6,976 ODI runs in India, taking his own total to 7,006 runs on home soil.
Another Record Against West Indies
Kohli’s century was also his 10th ODI hundred against the West Indies, matching his own record for the most ODI centuries against a single opponent. He also has 10 ODI centuries against Sri Lanka.
The innings further saw Kohli equal Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 13 international centuries against the West Indies, although Kohli reached that figure in 74 matches compared with Gavaskar’s 38.
Kohli also reached 200 sixes in ODIs during his remarkable assault. His nine sixes against the West Indies represented his highest number in a single ODI innings, surpassing his previous best of eight.
Kohli and Gill Dominate the Chase
Kohli shared a crucial 151-run partnership with Shubman Gill, putting India firmly in control after Rohit Sharma’s brisk 32.
Gill continued his own impressive run with 110 from 108 balls, recording his 10th ODI century. Kohli then took the attack apart as India accelerated toward the target.
Kohli’s century came off 74 deliveries, and he remained unbeaten until the winning runs were scored. His final 139 came at a strike rate of more than 157.
Kuldeep Yadav Turns the Game Around
Earlier, West Indies posted 295 for 7, powered by Justin Greaves’ maiden ODI century.
Greaves scored 101 from 108 balls, while John Campbell contributed 62 as the pair initially put India’s bowling attack under pressure.
Kuldeep Yadav then produced the key spell of the innings, claiming four wickets for 40 runs and preventing West Indies from building a much larger total.
India’s successful chase ultimately gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The second ODI is scheduled for September 30 in Guwahati, followed by the third match in Mullanpur on October 3.
