Jessy Makes History as First Bangladeshi Woman World Cup Umpire, US Embassy Congratulates: Former Bangladesh cricketer Shathira Jakir Jessy is set to make history as the first Bangladeshi woman umpire to officiate in a senior ICC World Cup. The milestone was further highlighted when the US Embassy in Dhaka congratulated her on Tuesday, noting her participation as an alumna of its International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).

Jessy, 34, has been selected among 14 umpires for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, scheduled from September 30 to November 2 in India and Sri Lanka. Her inclusion marks a groundbreaking achievement for Bangladesh cricket.
Before stepping into umpiring, Jessy represented Bangladesh in two ODIs and one T20I between 2011 and 2013. Transitioning to officiating, she steadily built her career by taking charge in high-profile tournaments. These included the Women’s Asia Cup, the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, and this year’s World Cup Qualifiers in Pakistan. Her consistent performances eventually paved the way for this coveted World Cup call-up.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) hailed her selection as a significant step forward. “Shathira’s appointment embodies the progressive expansion of women’s roles in cricket officiating and reflects the inclusive future of the sport,” the ICC said in a statement.
Speaking to the media, Jessy described the opportunity as “a long-cherished dream.” She credited her recent officiating performances at international events for boosting her profile. Drawing inspiration from Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat, Bangladesh’s first ICC Elite Panel umpire, Jessy expressed her ambition to join the elite panel herself in the future.

Her success is being celebrated not only in Bangladesh but also across South Asia. Many see it as a breakthrough for women’s cricket and a powerful symbol of progress for female officials. The recognition is expected to inspire the next generation of players and umpires who aim to leave their mark on the global stage.
