Medha Atre-Kulkarni Wins First Prize for ‘Hirkani: A Mother’s Love’ at BMM 2026: New Jersey-based artist Medha Atre-Kulkarni has won First Prize in the Oil & Acrylic category at an art competition held during the BMM 2026 Convention in Seattle, earning recognition for her evocative painting Hirkani: A Mother’s Love. The competition, held at the Seattle Convention Center as part of the BMM 2026 Convention, brought together artists from across the United States and Canada. The entries were evaluated by esteemed jurors Suchitra Bhosle and Pramod Kurlekar.
Atre-Kulkarni’s winning work draws inspiration from Hirkani, the legendary milkmaid and mother whose extraordinary act of courage has become part of the folklore associated with the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
A Mother’s Love Beyond Fear
The story of Hirkani is remembered as an example of extraordinary courage driven by a mother’s love rather than military training or battlefield experience.
According to the legend, Hirkani was a young milkmaid who entered Raigad Fort to sell milk. As evening approached, the fort gates were closed for the night, leaving her inside the fortress.
Although she was safe within the fort, Hirkani’s thoughts turned to her infant child waiting at home.
Faced with the prospect of spending the night away from her baby, she refused to accept the situation. Leaving the fort after its gates had closed was considered impossible, while the steep mountains surrounding Raigad presented an extremely dangerous route.
Yet her determination to reach her child overcame her fear.
According to the traditional account, under the faint light of the moon, Hirkani descended the treacherous mountainside without ropes, equipment or assistance. The journey presented the constant danger of a fatal fall, but her determination carried her forward.
It is this dramatic moment that Atre-Kulkarni sought to capture through her painting.
Bringing Hirkani’s Courage to the Canvas
In Hirkani: A Mother’s Love, the imposing cliffs represent the seemingly impossible obstacles confronting the young mother.
The moonlit landscape reflects the uncertainty and isolation of her journey while also introducing an element of hope. Against the vast, dark mountains, Hirkani’s vibrant crimson sari becomes the painting’s visual focal point.
The striking color serves as a symbol of courage, determination and the extraordinary strength that can emerge from an ordinary person.
The traditional story further recounts that when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj learned of Hirkani’s remarkable feat, he honored her bravery by ordering the construction of a defensive bastion at the location from which she descended. The structure became known as Hirkani Buruj and remains associated with her legendary story.
For Atre-Kulkarni, however, Hirkani represents much more than a historical or legendary character.
“This painting is my humble attempt to capture the bravery beyond words that Hirkani, a peasant milkmaid, displayed for the love of her baby,” Atre-Kulkarni said.
Her own experiences in the Sahyadri mountains helped deepen her connection with the story.
“As a teenager, I was an avid hiker of the Sahyadri mountains and visited many of its historic forts,” she said. “Those experiences gave me a firsthand glimpse into the immense scale and ruggedness of the terrain—and, in turn, a deeper appreciation for the extraordinary heroism attributed to Hirkani.”
A Personal Tribute to Mothers
The painting also carries a deeply personal message for the artist.
Atre-Kulkarni said artists often draw upon emotions and experiences from their own lives when creating their work. Through Hirkani: A Mother’s Love, she also sought to honor her own mother and the strength she demonstrated while raising her family.
The work is also a tribute to mothers more broadly and the sacrifices, hardships and difficult choices they face for their children.
“As a mother myself it is also my tribute to the immense hardships, sacrifices and difficult choices that mothers confront for their children at different stages of life,” she said.
For Atre-Kulkarni, Hirkani captures a powerful paradox at the heart of motherhood: the tenderness involved in nurturing a child and the fierce determination to protect one.
“Motherhood is the gentlest, but also the fiercest, protector,” she said.
Award-Winning Multidisciplinary Artist
Atre-Kulkarni is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist, art educator and live wedding and event artist based in New Jersey.
A graduate of the renowned Sir J.J. School of Art, she works across acrylic, oil and watercolor and has developed a multifaceted career spanning fine art, art education, commissioned artwork, live painting, corporate and private workshops, demonstrations and online art instruction.
Her work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions in the United States and internationally.
Her notable appearances and exhibitions include the Consulate General of India in New York, East Brunswick Public Library, ArtExpo NY, and a feature associated with Mrs. Universe in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Her speed-painting performances have also been presented at events including the NJ Convention at Harrah’s in Atlantic City, the Gandhian Society and NJALC.
Her artwork has appeared at venues and exhibitions including the Ellarslie Museum, Monmouth Museum, Alfa Art Gallery, GSWS, NJWS, WWAC, S4A and BMM shows.
Her paintings are also part of private and institutional collections, including the collection of Smt. Rajshree Birla and the Consulate General of India in New York, which has three of her paintings in its collection.

Beyond her studio practice, Atre-Kulkarni is committed to making art accessible to students and communities.
She teaches students throughout North America through online classes, workshops and demonstrations, while also providing art instruction through digital platforms and YouTube.
Her live wedding and event painting practice allows her to transform important personal occasions into original works of art, creating lasting visual memories for families and organizations.
