Nila Vikhe Patil Elected to Swedish Parliament, Bringing Maharashtra Roots to the Riksdag: Nila Vikhe Patil, a Sweden-based politician of Maharashtra origin, has been elected to the 349-member Swedish Parliament, the Riksdag, representing the City of Stockholm constituency for the Green Party (Miljöpartiet). Her election follows Sweden’s parliamentary vote held on September 13, with the Swedish Election Authority confirming the final results on September 19.
Vikhe Patil’s election has drawn attention in Maharashtra and among the Indian diaspora because of her family connections to one of the state’s prominent political and educational families. Born in Sweden, she spent part of her childhood in Ahmednagar, now officially Ahilyanagar, before building her professional and political career in Sweden.
A Maharashtra Connection in Swedish Politics
Nila Vikhe Patil is the daughter of educationist Ashok Vikhe Patil and granddaughter of former Union minister Balasaheb Vikhe Patil. She is also the niece of Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil.
Her family history is closely associated with education, cooperative institutions and public life in Maharashtra. Her great-grandfather, Vithalrao Vikhe Patil, is widely associated with the establishment of India’s first cooperative sugar factory at Pravaranagar.
Although born in Sweden, Vikhe Patil’s early years in Ahmednagar established a connection with Maharashtra that has remained part of her personal background.
Her election therefore represents a political career developed in Sweden while retaining family and cultural links to India.
From Education to Corporate Leadership
Vikhe Patil has built a professional career alongside her political activities.
According to reports, she studied at the University of Gothenburg’s School of Business, Economics and Law, earning undergraduate and MBA qualifications, and also pursued an MBA at Complutense University of Madrid.
She joined PwC in 2020, working in areas including strategy and management consulting. In April 2025, she became an authorised public accountant.
Her professional experience in finance, management and consulting has formed an important part of her career outside politics.
A Long Political Journey
Vikhe Patil’s parliamentary election is the latest stage of a political career that began years before her entry into the Riksdag.
She has been involved with Sweden’s Green Party and associated organizations for many years, including party activities in Gothenburg and Stockholm. She has also served on the Stockholm City Council and worked in the Swedish Prime Minister’s Office during the government of former Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.
Her experience in national government gave her exposure to policy areas including finance, taxation and housing.
She has also previously served as a political adviser, providing experience inside Sweden’s national political system before securing a seat in Parliament.
Environment and Children’s Welfare Among Her Priorities
Vikhe Patil’s public profile identifies environmental sustainability, biodiversity and climate-related issues among her areas of interest.
In a 2026 Swedish public broadcaster SVT candidate profile, she described a vision of a sustainable future in which biodiversity and ecosystems are protected and climate-related risks such as drought, flooding and water shortages are reduced. She also referred to the importance of ensuring that children have a secure future.
Her parliamentary priorities have also been reported as including environmental issues and children’s welfare.
The Green Party’s New Parliamentary Representation
Vikhe Patil enters Parliament as part of the Green Party’s 2026 representation.
The Swedish Election Authority’s final results gave the Green Party 22 seats in the 349-member Riksdag. The Social Democrats won 99 seats, the Moderates 70, the Sweden Democrats 62, the Left Party 30, the Centre Party 25, the Christian Democrats 22 and the Liberals 19.
The election produced a closely divided Parliament, with the centre-left grouping comprising the Social Democrats, Green Party, Left Party and Centre Party holding 176 seats, compared with 173 for the Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats and Liberals. Government formation and coalition negotiations remain a separate political process.
A New Chapter Begins on September 28
The newly elected members of the 2026–2030 Riksdag are scheduled to formally take up their parliamentary posts on September 28, 2026, according to the Swedish Parliament.
For Vikhe Patil, the transition marks the move from local and advisory political roles to Sweden’s national legislature.
Her election also highlights the increasingly international nature of the Indian diaspora, with individuals whose family histories are rooted in India participating in political and civic life across Europe and other parts of the world.
