Rupinder Ashworth Appointed as BWL Independent Chair. British Weight Lifting (BWL) has appointed Rupinder Ashworth as its new Independent Chair, marking a significant step forward in the organisation’s leadership and governance. Her appointment signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the national governing body of Olympic weightlifting and para powerlifting in the UK.

Rupinder Ashworth is the first woman ever to hold the position of Chair at BWL. She brings extensive experience in sports governance, business leadership, and strategic marketing. Known for her commitment to integrity, inclusion, and high-performance culture, Ashworth has been a valued member of BWL’s leadership since December 2018, when she first joined the board as an Independent Director. She later became Senior Independent Director in July 2024.
Ashworth will serve a four-year term, as outlined in the BWL Articles. Her appointment comes after a rigorous and transparent recruitment process conducted by the BWL Independent Nominations Committee. Notably, the process included participation from UK Sport Interim Chair Rachel Baillache, who was present during the interviews of shortlisted candidates, ensuring the selection was fair and aligned with national best practices.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Rupinder Ashworth stated:
“It is a tremendous honour to be appointed as the BWL Independent Chair. This is an organisation with proud traditions, ambitious goals, and a passionate community. I look forward to continuing working with the Board, executive team, and wider stakeholders to support the continued growth and success of the sport at all levels.”
Matthew Curtain, CEO of British Weight Lifting, also welcomed her appointment:
“We are delighted to welcome Rupinder Ashworth to the role of Independent Chair. Her insight and leadership will be instrumental as we deliver our strategic vision and work to ensure weightlifting and para powerlifting in the UK is strong, inclusive, and future-focussed.”
With this appointment, British Weight Lifting demonstrates its commitment to modern governance, gender representation, and inclusive growth in sport. Ashworth’s leadership is expected to strengthen the organisation’s efforts to grow participation, enhance performance pathways, and ensure long-term sustainability across all levels of British weightlifting.
