Renowned actress Shabana Azmi has been awarded with the prestigious Freedom of the City of London. This was to recognize her illustrious career in Indian cinema and her tireless advocacy for women’s rights.
Recognition for a Storied Career
Azmi’s nomination for the honor was put forward by Alderman Alastair King DL and Deputy Brian Mooney BEM. With a career spanning over five decades, Azmi made her mark with her debut performance in Satyajit Ray’s 1974 film ‘Ankur’. Since then, she has appeared in over 140 Hindi films and 12 international productions. She has earned accolades such as five National Awards for Best Actress and six Filmfare Awards.
Tribute to a Trailblazer
The upcoming UK Asian Film Festival will pay homage to Azmi’s iconic portrayals of women over the past half-century. Beyond her cinematic achievements, Azmi is a vocal advocate for public health and women’s rights. She is serving as President of Nivara Hakk and leading the Mijwan Welfare Society.
