Sri Lankan origin Sharmila Sivarajah Elected as Mayor of Crawley. The appointment came following the Annual Meeting of the Full Council on Friday, May 24th.
Councillor Sivarajah brings a wealth of experience and dedication to her new role. Representing the Bewbush and North Broadfield ward since 2022, she has been an active member of the community. Born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, her journey led her through Germany before settling in Crawley in 2004. In addition to her contributions as a councillor, she has pursued her studies, completing her degree and BTEC HND in Business in 2015. Alongside her civic duties, Councillor Sivarajah works as a school transport operator and is a proud parent to three children.
As the newly elected Mayor, Councillor Sivarajah has announced the Russell Martin Foundation as her chosen charity for the term 2024 to 2025. The foundation, dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals through football, education, health, and overall well-being, aligns with her commitment to community welfare.
Expressing her gratitude and sense of duty, Mayor Sivarajah emphasized, “I am acutely aware of the immense privilege and responsibility that comes with representing our town.” She pledged to serve with integrity, compassion, and dedication, promising to advocate for the needs and interests of all residents. Her vision is to ensure that Crawley remains a vibrant and thriving community that instills pride in its inhabitants.
In tandem with Mayor Sivarajah’s appointment, Councillor Jilly Hart was elected Deputy Mayor at the Annual Council meeting, signifying a united effort towards the betterment of Crawley under its new leadership.
With Mayor Sivarajah at the helm, Crawley looks forward to a future marked by progress, inclusivity, and prosperity for all its residents.
