Triple Triumph: Zakir Hussain Clinches 3 Grammys, Accompanied by Shankar’s Victory

In a momentous victory for Indian music, Shankar Mahadevan and Ustad Zakir Hussain’s fusion ensemble Shakti has seized the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album, with their latest release “This Moment.”

Announcing the win on social media platform X, the Grammys congratulated Shakti, stating, “Congrats Best Global Music Album winner – ‘This Moment’ Shakti. #GRAMMYs.”

Competing against esteemed artists such as Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido, Shakti’s achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian music on the global stage.

The acclaimed album “This Moment” features eight captivating tracks crafted by the virtuosic talents of John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist). During his acceptance speech, Mahadevan expressed gratitude to his fellow musicians, his family, friends, and above all, to India, drawing thunderous applause from the audience.

Mahadevan also extended heartfelt appreciation to his wife, Sangeeta, for her unwavering support, dedicating the award to her amidst the glitz and glamour of the ceremony.

Released on June 30, 2023, “This Moment” not only clinched the prestigious Best Global Music Album award but also garnered further accolades for Ustad Zakir Hussain. The legendary tabla maestro secured two additional Grammys, winning in the Best Global Music Performance category for “Pashto” and the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category for his collaboration “As We Speak” with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia.

Expressing his gratitude, Ustad Zakir Hussain thanked the Academy, fellow musicians, and his family, emphasizing the profound significance of love, music, and harmony in his life.

While celebrating these triumphs, the Ustad and his collaborators faced disappointment in the Best Instrumental Composition category, where they were nominated for “Motion.” Nonetheless, their remarkable achievements continue to resonate across the global music landscape, drawing admiration and applause from peers and fans alike.
