UK Parliamentary Delegation Visits Bangladesh to Discuss Democracy and Human Rights: A cross-party delegation of British parliamentarians is visiting Bangladesh for a week of discussions on parliamentary democracy, human rights, climate change, security and the Rohingya refugee crisis.

Led by Apsana Begum MP, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Bangladesh, the delegation includes Lord Kurbaan Hussain of the Liberal Democrats and independent MP Shaukat Adam.

On October 6, the delegation met Bangladesh Parliament Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal MP at the Parliament complex. The parliamentarians have also met British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cook and held discussions with senior officials.

Organised by the APPG on Bangladesh with support from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK), the visit includes meetings with government representatives, civil society organisations and international non-governmental organisations.

Focus on Democratic Governance

Parliamentary democracy, government accountability and legislative oversight are among the key subjects on the delegation’s agenda. The meetings provide an opportunity for British and Bangladeshi representatives to exchange perspectives on parliamentary practices and the role of democratic institutions.

The delegation is also examining issues related to human rights and women’s participation in politics. Discussions are expected to address the importance of inclusive representation and the participation of women in public decision-making.

Climate Change and Rohingya Refugee Crisis

Climate change and regional security are other important areas of engagement. Bangladesh faces significant climate-related challenges, including flooding, cyclones and rising sea levels, making international cooperation on resilience and adaptation particularly relevant.

The Rohingya refugee crisis is also expected to feature in discussions. Bangladesh continues to host large numbers of Rohingya refugees who fled violence and persecution in Myanmar. The situation presents ongoing humanitarian and regional challenges requiring sustained international attention.

Strengthening UK-Bangladesh Relations

The visit highlights the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in maintaining dialogue between the United Kingdom and Bangladesh. By meeting political leaders, officials and civil society representatives, the delegation aims to gain a broader understanding of Bangladesh’s political and social landscape.

The cross-party composition of the delegation also provides a platform for discussing issues of mutual concern beyond party-political differences.

As the programme continues, the discussions are expected to contribute to continued engagement between the two countries on democratic governance, human rights, climate action and humanitarian cooperation.
