Los Angeles County Proclaims August 15, 2025, as India Independence Day: The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has officially proclaimed August 15, 2025, as India Independence Day. The motion, introduced by Supervisor Janice Hahn and approved on August 12, recognizes the Indian American community’s significant contributions to the county’s cultural, economic, and social fabric.

Honoring 79 Years of Freedom

India will mark the 79th anniversary of its Independence Day on August 15, commemorating freedom from more than 200 years of British colonial rule. Across the world, Indian communities celebrate the day with flag hoisting, cultural performances, parades, and traditional kite flying.

Recognizing the Indian American Community in Los Angeles

“Our Indian American community is an integral part of the fabric of LA County,” said Supervisor Hahn. “I am proud to represent this large and growing community, and to join them in celebrating almost eight decades of independence for a rising, vibrant India.”

With more than 98,000 residents, the Indian American population is one of the fastest-growing South Asian communities in the region. Hahn’s district includes the City of Artesia, home to the county’s well-known “Little India” district, a hub for Indian-owned businesses, restaurants, and cultural organizations.

This is not the county’s first recognition of Indian culture. In 2022, Supervisor Hahn championed the county’s first-ever official acknowledgment of Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

A Call for Community Celebration

The proclamation encourages all residents to participate in India Independence Day events throughout the month of August. By doing so, the county aims to celebrate Indian culture while fostering unity among diverse communities.

A Global Celebration

Around the globe, Indians and friends of India come together in the spirit of freedom, service, and cultural pride.

With this proclamation, Los Angeles County affirms its commitment to celebrating diversity and recognizing the Indian community’s contributions to the region’s cultural and economic growth.
