Indian American Psychiatrist Sarah Jukaku Draws Attention as Husband Abdul El-Sayed Advances in Michigan Senate Race: Following Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, attention is increasingly turning to his campaign, political views and personal background—including that of his Indian American wife, Dr. Sarah Jukaku.

El-Sayed, a physician and former Detroit health official, is seeking to make history as he advances toward the general election. If successful, he could become the first Muslim U.S. senator in American history.

Who is Sarah Jukaku?

Dr. Sarah Jukaku is an Indian American psychiatrist based in Ann Arbor and affiliated with University of Michigan Health. She earned her medical degree from Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The daughter of Indian immigrants, Jukaku was raised with strong cultural and religious values. Her father, Jukaku S. Tayeb, also known as Jukaku Shamsuddin Mohamed Tayeb, is a practicing physician and nephrologist.

El-Sayed has written about his wife’s family background in his book Healing Politics: A Doctor’s Journey into the Heart of Our Political Epidemic. He noted that her parents came to the United States from a village in India.

Jukaku met El-Sayed while they were students at the University of Michigan. Their relationship was featured in a 2006 article published by The Michigan Daily, the university’s student newspaper.

The couple married in 2006 and have two daughters.

A strong Indian American connection

Jukaku’s background has added an important Indian American dimension to El-Sayed’s political profile. Her family story reflects the experience of Indian immigrants who established professional careers in the United States while maintaining connections to their cultural heritage.

Her medical career also parallels El-Sayed’s background in healthcare. Both have worked in medicine while becoming involved in broader conversations around healthcare, public policy and American society.

Jukaku has appeared alongside her husband in campaign materials and videos as El-Sayed’s political profile has grown.

A historic Senate campaign

El-Sayed’s Democratic primary victory has positioned him for a closely watched general election campaign in Michigan. His campaign has emphasized healthcare, economic inequality and social policy, while his candidacy has attracted attention because of its potential historic significance.

If elected, El-Sayed would make history as the first Muslim senator in U.S. history.

For Indian Americans and other immigrant communities, the campaign also highlights the growing role of diverse American families in the country’s political landscape. Jukaku’s story—from an Indian immigrant family to a career in American medicine and a prominent role alongside a U.S. Senate candidate—has become part of that broader narrative.
