Indian-Origin Japanese Politician Yogendra Puranik ‘Yogi’ Announces Candidacy for Ibaraki Prefectural Assembly Elections: Former Edogawa City Councillor plans to contest as an independent candidate from Tsuchiura in December 2026, focusing on education, regional economic development and public services.

Yogendra Puranik, popularly known as Yogi, an Indian-born Japanese politician and social worker, has announced his intention to contest the December 2026 Ibaraki Prefectural Assembly elections as an independent candidate from the Tsuchiura constituency in Japan.

Puranik made the announcement through a public statement on October 31, following a press conference held on October 29. According to his announcement, major Japanese newspapers published reports about his electoral plans on October 30.

Puranik said his decision followed four and a half years of living in Tsuchiura, during which he developed a deeper understanding of the city’s strengths, challenges and opportunities. He believes the region has considerable potential and that more can be done to improve residents’ quality of life and strengthen the local economy.

Outlining his priorities, Puranik said he intends to focus on community safety, education, regional economic development and transparent public services. He plans to draw on his professional experience across Japanese manufacturing, information technology, banking, politics, government administration and educational leadership.

A Journey from India to Japanese Public Life

Born in Maharashtra, India, Yogendra Puranik moved to Japan in 2001. He studied at Savitribai Phule Pune University and later pursued management education at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.

Before entering politics, he worked with several companies, including Infosys, Fujifilm, Polaris Software Lab, Mizuho Bank and Rakuten Bank.

In April 2019, Puranik made history when he was elected to the Edogawa City Assembly in Tokyo, becoming the first person of Indian origin to win an election in Japan. His election attracted attention among the Indian diaspora and highlighted the growing participation of foreign-origin residents in Japanese public life.

His career also includes a significant contribution to education. In April 2022, he was appointed principal of Ibaraki Prefectural Tsuchiura First High School, becoming the first foreign-origin public school principal in Japan, according to his professional profile.

His experience across corporate management, public administration, education and community engagement has shaped his approach to public service.

Continuing Community Work in Edogawa

Although his proposed candidacy will take him to Tsuchiura, Puranik has stated that he intends to continue his social welfare and cultural activities in Edogawa, Tokyo.

He has also appealed for volunteers and supporters to help establish his campaign organisation, stating that the team-building process is still underway.

His campaign message is: “A stronger Tsuchiura. A stronger Ibaraki. A stronger Japan. Let’s build our future together!”

Significance for the Indian Diaspora

Puranik’s latest electoral announcement is attracting attention within the Indian community in Japan and among the wider Indian diaspora.

His journey from Maharashtra to elected public office in Japan represents an example of participation by people of Indian origin in the political and civic institutions of their adopted countries.

If elected to the Ibaraki Prefectural Assembly, Puranik would bring his experience in business, education, administration and local government to the prefectural legislature.

The December 2026 election will determine whether voters in Tsuchiura give him a new mandate to represent their interests at the prefectural level.
