Yasmine Dar, a Labour councillor representing Moston, was elected to this esteemed ceremonial role during a council meeting held on Wednesday. Serving for a period of one year, she will represent the city at civic events and actively advocate for its interests.

Having resided in Manchester for over five decades, Dar was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. She has dedicated herself to championing social justice and has made significant contributions to the welfare sector throughout her career. Furthermore, she founded the acclaimed charity “Community on Solid Ground,” which offers support to young individuals in Whalley Range.

Expressing her gratitude and humility, Dar conveyed her profound honor upon being appointed Lord Mayor in her acceptance speech. She pledged to utilize her position to champion diversity, inclusivity, and foster a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels valued within the city of Manchester.

Dar’s appointment serves as a remarkable milestone for Manchester, a city characterized by its sizable and growing Asian Muslim population. It stands as a testament to the city’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusivity, inspiring other communities to follow suit.

Commencing on July 1, Dar’s tenure as Lord Mayor will be accompanied by her daughter Amina, who will serve as Lady Mayoress, and her brother Majid Dar, a former Manchester councillor, who will fulfill the role of Consort.
