Harris leads Trump by nearly 50 points amongst South Asian Voters in Battleground States. A recent poll commissioned by the Indian American Impact Fund reveals that Kamala Harris holds a commanding lead over Donald Trump among South Asian voters in key battleground states. The survey highlights that this voter bloc, which could prove decisive in swing states, is highly motivated to support Harris, aligning with her stance on top election issues.

Harris Leads Trump by 48-Point Margin

Among South Asian voters in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, Harris enjoys a 68% to 20% lead over Trump. While 4% expressed support for other candidates, 7% of voters remain undecided.

Voters’ Favorability and Motivation

The poll reveals that Harris is widely popular, with 71% of respondents viewing her favorably and only 25% holding an unfavorable view. In stark contrast, Trump is deeply unpopular among this demographic, with just 22% favorability and 74% viewing him unfavorably.

Motivation to vote also tilts in favor of Harris. 80% of Harris supporters reported being “extremely motivated” (scoring 10 on a 0-10 scale) to vote, compared to 66% of Trump supporters. Overall, 72% of South Asian voters say they are highly motivated to participate in the election.

Top Issues: Economy and Abortion Take Center Stage

When asked which issue is most important in their vote for president, South Asian voters identified:

  • Inflation and the economy: 26%
  • Abortion rights: 19%
  • Foreign policy: 12%
  • Gun control: 9%
  • Healthcare: 9%

The survey also underscores that 76% of South Asian voters support abortion rights, aligning with Harris’ position on the issue, while only 16% believe abortion should be illegal most or all of the time.

Harris Trusted Over Trump on Key Issues

In a surprising twist, Harris leads Trump in trust on traditional Republican issues like the economy, taxes, and crime. The poll indicates that South Asian voters trust Harris at least 2-to-1 over Trump on a broad range of issues, signaling strong confidence in her policies and approach.

Bottom Line: South Asian Voters Could Be Decisive

With high enthusiasm and strong support for Harris, South Asian voters could play a crucial role in securing battleground states. Targeted outreach to this community may be pivotal in Harris’ bid to make history as the first South Asian American president.

Survey Methodology

The survey, conducted by GBAO between September 16-22, 2024, polled 600 South Asian likely voters in battleground states via phone and text-to-web. The margin of error is ±4 percentage points at a 95% confidence interval.
