British Asian Rugby Association C.I.C Launches National Lottery Heritage Fund Project: Beyond the Try Line – Celebrating Community Heritage in Rugby: The British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) C.I.C has officially launched its landmark National Lottery Heritage Fund project, Beyond the Try Line – Celebrating Community Heritage in Rugby. The launch took place at the prestigious Yorkshire Asian Business Association (YABA) Awards and Diwali Celebration, marking a powerful moment of recognition for South Asian contributions to British sport.
This announcement represents a major milestone in BARA’s 20-year mission to champion South Asian participation, leadership, and visibility in rugby. Moreover, the project will play a crucial role in documenting and preserving the stories of individuals and communities whose contributions have strengthened rugby both on and off the field.
Preserving Untold Stories
Beyond the Try Line aims to capture lived experiences, cultural heritage, and achievements through oral histories, archival materials, educational resources, and community engagement. Additionally, the project will safeguard these narratives to ensure future generations understand the vital role South Asian communities have played in shaping British rugby.
Honouring a 20-Year Legacy
Dr Ikram Butt, Founder of BARA, expressed his pride in the initiative.
“This project honours the pioneers who paved the way and acknowledges the rich cultural heritage South Asian communities have brought to rugby. We are delighted to celebrate this milestone during BARA’s 20th anniversary year,” he said.

Sharon Kaur Jandu OBE, a key collaborator and long-time supporter of BARA, highlighted the lasting impact of the initiative.
