British Asian Rugby Awards to be Held at Parliament

UK

British Asian Rugby Awards to be Held at Parliament. The British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) will host its inaugural British Asian Rugby Awards at the iconic Speaker’s House in the Palace of Westminster on November 4th, celebrating the achievements of British South Asians in both rugby league and union. The event aims to recognize the contributions of these athletes to the sport and their wider community, promoting unity and positive social change.

Dr. Ikram Butt, BARA founder and the first British Asian to represent England in rugby, expressed the significance of the event: “These awards represent a milestone in recognizing the success of South Asians who have inspired others, challenged stereotypes, and positively impacted their communities. Hosting this event in Parliament underscores the growing importance of representation and inclusivity in sport.”

The awards will bring together key figures from politics, rugby, business, media, and community leadership, fostering dialogue on how sport can unite communities and combat issues such as racism and Islamophobia. The hope is that this event will become an annual celebration, offering a platform to highlight diversity and inclusion in rugby while countering discrimination.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House, said: “It’s a privilege to host the British Asian Rugby Awards. This event is a testament to the growing representation and success of British South Asians in rugby, and it celebrates the power of sport to foster unity, respect, and diversity. I’m honored to support BARA’s efforts.”

Phil Davies, former Welsh captain and international coach, praised the initiative: “As rugby continues to grow globally, it’s inspiring to see initiatives like the British Asian Rugby Awards celebrating diverse contributions. Rugby is about breaking down barriers and creating opportunities, driving positive change both on and off the field.”

The event will also feature remarks from Rt Hon Lord Addington, vice president of the UK Sports Association and captain of the Commons & Lords RFU Team, who emphasized the unifying power of rugby: “It’s wonderful to see these awards showcasing the achievements of British South Asians in rugby. The sport bridges communities, promotes understanding, and brings people together through a shared passion.”

With a focus on diversity, inclusion, and community, the British Asian Rugby Awards will stand as a powerful testament to the role of sports in driving social cohesion and fostering cultural understanding.
