Canada and India Celebrate Vaisakhi on the Hill: The Canada India Foundation (CIF) held a series of meetings on Parliament Hill, calling for a consistent and non-partisan approach to strengthening relations between Canada and India.

The visit coincided with Vaisakhi, a major cultural and agricultural festival celebrated widely in India and by Indo-Canadian communities across Canada. The timing added cultural significance to the discussions, which focused on economic cooperation, parliamentary engagement, and community relations.

Reception Hosted by Indian High Commissioner
As part of the visit, Dinesh Patnaik hosted a reception at his official residence in Ottawa. The event was attended by Members of Parliament from multiple parties, CIF representatives, and members of the Indo-Canadian community.

During the reception, Patnaik noted that recent developments indicate a positive trajectory in bilateral relations and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation. He also referred to the role of leadership from Narendra Modi and Justin Trudeau in supporting engagement between the two countries.
Meetings with Members of Parliament
The CIF delegation met with several Members of Parliament from different regions and political affiliations, including Marc Dalton, Brad Vis, Andrew Scheer, Shuvloy Majumdar, Adam Chambers, John Brassard, John Zerucelli, and Peter Fonseca.

According to CIF, the discussions focused on enhancing long-term cooperation and ensuring continuity in bilateral engagement across political cycles.
Key Proposals Presented
During the meetings, CIF outlined five proposals aimed at strengthening institutional and economic ties:
- Reconstitution of the Canada–India Parliamentary Friendship Group
- Progress on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)
- Revival of the “Diwali on the Hill” celebration in 2026
- Formation of an agri-food working group to support trade
- Engagement of CIF as a non-partisan resource for India-related matters
CIF representatives stated that these measures are intended to support policy continuity and expand economic opportunities.
Focus on Trade and Agriculture
Agriculture remains a central component of Canada–India trade relations. Canadian exports such as pulses, canola, and processed foods are significant in the Indian market. CIF noted that further progress on CEPA could expand trade in these sectors, along with areas such as critical minerals and clean energy.
The observance of Vaisakhi, traditionally associated with harvest and agriculture, highlighted the importance of this sector in bilateral cooperation.
Community and Cultural Engagement
CIF also emphasized the role of the Indo-Canadian community, which numbers over 1.8 million people, in strengthening cultural and economic ties between the two countries. Events such as Diwali on the Hill were identified as platforms to promote cultural inclusion and engagement.
Outlook
The visit concluded with CIF expressing support for continued dialogue between policymakers, industry stakeholders, and community organizations. The organization indicated that sustained engagement and institutional mechanisms would be key to advancing Canada–India relations in the coming years.
Founded in 2007, the Canada India Foundation is an independent, non-partisan organization that works to enhance bilateral ties through collaboration with policymakers, business leaders, and community groups.
