Kerala-Origin NASA Astronaut Dr. Anil Menon Makes History with ISS Mission Launch on July 14, 2026: Indian-origin NASA astronaut Dr. Anil Menon embarked on his first mission to the International Space Station (ISS) on July 14, 2026, marking a historic milestone for both NASA and the global Indian community. Launching aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Menon joined Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina on an approximately eight-month scientific expedition that will advance human space exploration and groundbreaking research in microgravity.
For Kerala, the mission carries special significance. Although born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dr. Menon’s family traces its roots to Ottapalam in Kerala’s Palakkad district, making him the first astronaut with Kerala ancestry to travel into space. The achievement has sparked celebrations across the state, further strengthening Kerala’s long-standing association with India’s space programme, which began with the establishment of ISRO’s early rocket launch facilities at Thumba. Palakkad now boasts an extraordinary connection to three astronauts—Dr. Anil Menon, private astronaut Anna Menon, and Gaganyaan astronaut-designate Air Commodore Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair.
A physician, engineer, and U.S. Space Force Colonel, Dr. Menon brings an exceptional blend of expertise to NASA’s astronaut corps. Before becoming an astronaut, he served as an emergency medicine physician, worked as NASA’s flight surgeon, supported astronauts aboard the ISS, and became SpaceX’s first flight surgeon, helping develop medical support systems for the company’s pioneering commercial human spaceflight missions. His career has also included frontline military service in Afghanistan and humanitarian medical work with climbers on Mount Everest.
During his eight-month stay aboard the ISS, Dr. Menon will conduct cutting-edge scientific research designed to advance future missions to the Moon and Mars while improving healthcare on Earth. His work will include studying how long-duration spaceflight affects blood circulation and cardiovascular health, testing artificial intelligence and augmented reality-assisted medical procedures, improving semiconductor crystal manufacturing in microgravity, and conducting biomedical experiments that could support regenerative medicine and advanced healthcare technologies.
The mission also underscores the continued spirit of international cooperation in space, with astronauts from NASA and Roscosmos working together aboard the International Space Station despite geopolitical challenges on Earth. Menon’s expertise in aerospace medicine and emergency care is expected to play a critical role in supporting both scientific research and crew health throughout the mission.
Dr. Anil Menon’s inaugural journey into space represents more than a personal achievement—it is an inspiring testament to the power of education, scientific excellence, and global collaboration. As he begins his first voyage beyond Earth, his remarkable journey from medicine and engineering to the frontiers of space exploration is expected to inspire a new generation of students, scientists, and aspiring astronauts in India and around the world
